Another day of brush clearing and I'll be ready to put this big ash to sleep. That's the problem with cutting on my place, it's overgrown with honeysuckle bush. I measured 81" in circumference at breast height. If my math is correct that makes it about 25.75" in diameter and, I'm guessing, around 80'+ tall. Because of the holidays it won't come down until after the first of the year. Anybody wanna help? Not kidding!
If you are going to the trouble of clearing honeysuckle or other invasive brush, treat with Tordon as you cut to or you are wasting your time.
Looks like fun Ralphie, but I can't justify a trip from SD to Kentucky for CSS! Looks like perfect firewood to me big enough to make lots of splits, but now to big that it's a PITA to handel! Nice and straight, dead and drying, not to many branches! Decent BTU's. I dream about trees like that? Was it an EAB victim? You going to drop it with the 661 or 461? It's fun to have options!
EAB killed it and every other ash on my place, except for 3 blue ash trees. For some reason the EAB isn't fond of blue ash. I have one more just about the same size to bring down, but it's a difficult drop, not as open as this one. Looks like death will come to it with the 661 with a 32" bar and a full skip chain.
That's what I've been doing for a while now. Working one small area at a time. Cut and spray, cut and spray. Seems like it will never end. The other nasty is Russian olive, as bad or worse than honeysuckle bush. Hate 'en both. It's an all out war against them!
That's a big one for sure. I always think about how long it will keep my house warm when starting the CSS process for each tree. Good luck with your Honeysuckle battle, just keep at it.
best way I've found to clear honeysuckle is with a dozer. that way it rips the roots out with it. then just put it in a pile for 6 months. then throw a match. I would totally be there to help if you weren't an 8 hour drive one way. I'm all outta logs from the tree service and I miss cutting and splitting.
Well, it's half way from Rabbit Hash. KY to Chatham, NY., Maybe Chatham is close. There are a couple of great watering holes there.
Dropping that tree with the 661 will barely be a good snack for 'er...gonna at least let the big dog buck some trunk rounds too?!
That will give you lots of nice splits once it is on the ground Safely and cut up Is it leaning the way you would like it to be ?
damm, we get a bit of honeysuckle around here but not anything like that. I've seen evening grosbeaks eat the fruit but no other takers. I've seen squirrels peel long strips of the bark off.
