Nope. Went to Daytona Beach for almost a week, and when we got back, most of the ice and snow was gone. Just as I expected based on the forecast. Still getting below freezing most nights. Think I'm heading to the woods after eating a sammich, although the rain may preempt things. Brother just called and may need some help with a brake line that blew. Crap.
I'm taking the day off until we move more wood in later, then it's off for a ride so we can listen to the frogs in the swamp then find that Beech. We will take time this week so we can install two gates so the trails are closed off, we will not be doing the multi use trail.
I found the Beech I was talking about, not worth taking a picture, it should make nice dirt one of these days.
I did find this Maple (Pics 8985 & 86 ) up near the rotten Beech, on the way back I found this small Beech with the Yellow Birch just out of the picture.
Birch looks like a fresh break. Maple gets punky pretty fast, like birch. If nothing else, it'll make good soil Like pd says, being up off the ground , may still be good.
I was just up in the area where the Maple is last week, either I never saw it or it just came down. The end where it broke off is punky but the rest seems fine, I'll find out how good it is before the end of the weekend.
Bogydave, we'll run that little 028 Woodboss I have at the small Maple, the majority of it sounded good when I did some knocking on it. The Beech & Yellow Birch both are good, I hope that area will be opened up by Sunday, it all depends on the weather.
Likely Beech Bark Disease (http://na.fs.fed.us/fhp/bbd/). General sentiment around here is to remove beech saplings because they are very unlikely to produce a decent log. We have a one-acre pocket of Beech - I cut a little last year (standing dead), and a few more this year, but haven't burned any yet.
