What could go wrong?

A buddy of mine alerted me to this and told me I had to watch 2 of this guys videos. I did and was in shock. He's basically made every mistake you could possibly do with an OWB. You won't believe how many strikes he put against himself.

Yeah, I bet the indoor stove uses less wood. Green wood, wet, snow covered wood, open ducts, uninsulated pipes on a long run...WOW.

Sounds like he has two improperly installed systems. OWB and attic ductwork. And WTH is that cluster at the furnace plenum (3:56) of unsupported OWB lines?

Makes you wonder just how the next wood stove install is going to turn out?

Why would anyone not insulate underground lines?????

He's from Michigan, I believe.

 

I was only half paying attention - but did I hear it was something he bought that way? Now was discovering everything that is wrong with it? If so, he's doing OK in getting it figured out, which is good. But if he built all that that way, yah, about everything that could be done wrong, was.

He went a little heavy on the chain tightening though.

I've been doing ash removal wrong as well.

I was stirring, raking the fines to the front and letting it burn down. Going to find my shorts and tennis shoes as we speak.

 

His solution was to blame the boiler and go with an indoor. The second video has him saying that you have to do things differently with the indoor stove. He was used ti throwing green wood and wet wood but with the indoor, dry wood is better. Enough said???

 

That's more like coal removal there, bunch of good heat in his cans.

Uh yeah, seems almost self evident & not terribly complicated. I'd bet a hot coal in the top of those shoes would smart a bit.

Ok, just so this is real clear, so am I & that ain't me or my boiler.

 

The only reason I can think of is when you are running a loop for a heated driveway.

Yes, that too. But it seems a little counter productive to enjoy not having to shovel or snow blow a path to the boiler, when you'll be making that journey a lot more from the higher wood usage.

I can't believe more ppl in the comments (on the videos home page) aren't saying he's doing it wrong. maybe cutting and burning is just something I've been doing so long it just seems like common sense.

 

@2:15 he comments "it is cold" wtf?? why is he wearing shorts then? I also like how he takes the burning logs out. and here I've spent my whole life avoiding touching things that are on fire. so basically he loads the same wood twice.

Probably happy with the views he's getting and then the Wah - Wah moment happens when he finds out why.

 

My neighbor’s got one of those big central boiler. That thing goes through 1/4 of a cord a day! I’m not getting one.
