I recently found an obscure family reference that a great x grandfather had died in the War. Had no name, but was doubly intrigued because he was a Quaker, and buried in a Friends Cemetery. I did on my previous detective cap and set to work. I learned the name of a grandfather who served, and uncovered all kinds of mind blowing history. My 3X great grandfather enlisted with His brother and both survived. They were in the Indiana 16th Infantry. They fought together from Richmond KY( he was wounded there) through the Vicksburg campaign. Uncle was wounded at Arkansas Post. I have always had an interest in the War, but now that I have found a true familial connection, I am a neophyte on researching units and all that. Anyone do this research for family? Any neat discoveries? In the little I have done, my one question as why these Quaker brothers enlisted together was answered for me by research this week. Frederick Douglas was nearly beaten to death while speaking in Pendleton, IN. he was spirited away from the mob by one of my great grandparents to the home of another great grandfather and remained there until he recovered. My Civil war grandfather and his brother were children in that home at the time. Question answered. Still have tons of research, but I have found that there is an event every year at the Richmond battlefield. I will be attending it this August. Any research advice is appreciated and I would enjoy reading what anyone learned about their veteran family.
Woodwidow For Sure! Sourwood , I got back to my ggGrandfather , William Meyers b 1834 in PA. He tried to enlist, rejected because of term I forgot, similar to "poor health". Disappointed, started freighting, 6 horse team back and forth through dangerous territory to what is now Denver Colorado. He lived almost 95 years though. He was successful in Denver, he and his wife are listed as Colorado Pioneers in the Colorado Historical Society records (it was Kansas Territory back then ). I also had good luck back in the day online via my public library card, there was a database called something like "Heritage". One other place that was full of great info is RootsWeb.com Home Page , I narrow by state, then county and good info on the worldconnect part. And of course Ancestry.com, but $$ . One of William's brothers ended up in Indiana. Brown County. Where were your Indiana ancestors? I cannot get past my gggGrandfather, Henry. I found an article where Henry's father (my ggggGrandfather) came to America during the "Colonial days". Hard to narrow that down, Henry b. 1784 in PA, so his father could have been born and emigrated anywhere from 1730'ish - 1776 PS, there are free searches out there. The first page or so when searching are all pay sites, but there are free sites. One of the best I found was archived newspapers (think Colorado Historical Society) and I could actually see advertisements my ggGrandfather ran for his business. FUN STUFF!!
Wildwest Brown County is my neighbor to the east. It is a tourist county, with lots of beautiful scenery and small towns. Attracts a lot of tourists turning the leaf color changing. Motorcycle riding is a big draw too. Large tracts of national and state forests. My grandfather was there as a forester when the concept of preserving forests was new. It became an artist colony way back when. One of my great-uncles is part of the fabric of what makes it unique. A book he wrote is were I learned of my family being in the war. Moved there as a newly wed in the forties and lived about a year in a large military tent as they built their home.
