Just wondering???? My wife is basically crippled by arthritis. Every winter I go through the "I hate where we live, I can't go outside, it is cold out and I hate it, I hurt everywhere, I know it would be all better and I would never hurt or be crippled if we moved!" It takes a toll on me and I try to not let it get to me but it does. I unfortunately have to deal with reality and can't just willy nilly quit everything and run away from life. However, have any of you moved somewhere and experienced substantial relief, or moved to only realize no help? If it matters she is basically head to toe, osteoarthritis, that moves from joint to joint.

My Uncle has been deteriorating lately. We live in Michigan and he has found the cold really bothers him. He spent October in Florida and went back down right after Thanksgiving. The warmth helps him, but I do not think his ailment is osteoarthritis. Maybe you could take an extended vacation somewhere warm. Try Arizona that does not have the humidity.

I'm sorry Greenstick . I wonder if you could use your camper on the lake for a trial somewhere? Or, winter where it's warmer and spender summers at your camp? For all we know if she was outside more, it could lift her spirits, that has an impact on pain.

I hate to say it but she is right...sort of. It really depends upon where the move is.

Example: My sister and her husband moved from MI to Arizona for the months of October through April or May. He was terribly crippled up with arthritis and no doubt his employment was not the best for his condition as he worked for a city in the water department. This, of course, found him many times in holes they dug; summer or winter. When he retired, they purchased a motor home and traveled through the summer and decided to try Arizona for the winter. Bingo! He threw away the cane he had been using and walked like a normal person. Come the following summer he just gradually got worse as they came back east and that lasted until they once more parked in Arizona.

My sister was constantly after me to come on down to see if it would do me any good (because of my back and other problems). I had always loved the north and resisted until one year we decided we'd give it a try. We left here in early January and went to Texas. Yes, I felt a bit better once we got to a warm place. Then it turned cold so we went further west (to Big Bend Nat. Park) for a couple weeks. Again it turned cold and we headed further west and found my sister. We liked the weather and the warmth but were not fond if where they were. For some reason or another I had always wondered what it was like around Yuma, so we headed south. We found a great place so stayed for a couple months. I felt pretty good...until we came back home. Long story short, we went there for 5 winters and yes, it helped a lot. Perhaps not as much relief as my BIL got but good relief nonetheless. We stopped going there only because my wife got to the point that she could not travel for a while.

The only bad part of going there and coming back here is that I no longer love the winters like I used to. I tolerate them and love the cool but not the cold. I don't mind deep snow either but that is something we rarely have here where we are now. It is much different here than in northern MI.

But again, yes, the lower humidity and warmer temperatures can definitely help.

Hate to hear that about your wife. I found out recently I have athritis in my spine. Supposedly mine is normal for someone my age, 36, but I still think it's weird for me to have it. I am much more active than most people. I can't remember the last time I sat around to relax before 8pm. Maybe that's the cause of it.

I know several who have moved to Arizona . Most retired, some working PT gigs. Mostly for medical reasons.
Some leave when it gets real hot as they have relatives and/or friends they can stay with North.

Also a niece who moved from LA because they just couldn't take the expenses any more.

My thoughts are with your wife, more than I could say. I can say this about arthritis, it's the pits ! When EVERYTHING is a challenge to do EVERY time. A simple thing like getting up to take a leak is postponed until the urge surpasses the pain of getting up. Things you enjoy, like cutting firewood becomes a seemingly impossible task. Every day I pray that I'm not going to evolve into a grumpy miserable sob. Maybe we should have a "arthritis" thread where people could share things that help or to vent their frustrations as needed. Sorry for the rant.

Greenstick, I do hope you and your lovely bride can see a way thru this... ailments such as anything related to arthritis can be debilitating to more than the sufferer.
Please take your time and talk extensively with your wife on this new and upcoming chapter of your all’s life together.
You will help her to receive her healing and yours as well.

B12 shots and/or supplements may be worth trying
I've suffered some serious muscle fatigue and joint pain the last 6-7 years. I wrote it off as age related until recently because it's been getting worse.
Did some research and some of the meds I've been on the last 3 years have been know to cause some of my symptoms and a B12 deficiency .
Made Dr appointment and got a B12 shot. Immediate results .
Still have mild pain but very tolerable without Advil and aleve

B 12 is a new one. I have another rheumatologist appointment today I'm definitely going to be asking about this. Did you by chance turn anything else up ? Thanks

First off Greenstick I hope you and your wife are guided to see clearly what is best for you both. My mother and my sister have RA, my sister has is severely & in constant pain, takes injections daily to cope with the pain. In fact we are waiting for blood work to return as the injections she takes, one of the side effects is leukemia. But that's another bowl of wax.

This is why so many folks especially elderly folks move to the warmer southern states. I know so many people who have moved because they are older or have health issues and the warmer climate makes them feel so much better. I know picking up and moving to an entirely different climate and state is a daunting task. I am sure you will talk to your wife and weigh all the pros and cons, but think about the better quality of life she may have and the less toll on her body. It's a big decision and again I wish you all the best!

My father is constantly egging my mother to spend more time in the winter months down south, but she won't have it as much as she aches she will not be away from the family for that long and all the grandkids that long. She is that old school typical italian mom!

    No, nothing else.
Drs suck . She wanted to go 2 other routes that I refused before she got to the B12 idea.
She wanted to blame my BP and glucose which I monitor daily and I knew wasn't the cause of my problem.
I know joint pain can be reduced by good hydration. Which I have a big problem with in the summer. My work has a lot to do with my problems and I'm well aware of it. My Dr just doesn't want to listen .

Thanks for the responses. There is so much to consider for a move and maybe in different circumstances it would be much simpler. Family all being in Dakotah Territory, the unplanned loss of a second income when our lives were being lived (in hindsight foolishly)as such a two income expenses before, 2 years of medical issues/bills semi related with arthritis, ect. I am trying to be positive and clear headed as possible with the aspects we are dealing with and contemplating. Not to pity party but it just is difficult and part of making this thread is to try to avoid making a blind jump in desperation and live to regret it. Sometimes I just feel spent physically/mentally/emotionally and am afraid of reacting vs making informed decisions. Thanks for the support, understanding and opportunity to vent.

Greenstick, I'm loaded with it also and I can tell you this, "weather changes" mess with me bad, but it really doesn't matter hot or cold, only extreme dampness. My oldest Brother went from Massachutes to Florida and he just said he now sweats and hurts vs. cold and hurts. My prayers are with you and your wife, I have good days and bad but I'm eventually going North to New Hampshire. I love the change of seasons and the freedom up there. I "can" tell you, and maybe try for her what helps me, Invest in a small "hot tub" jacuzzi type, or maybe a bathtub with one installed. I feel much better after. The Doctors had me on a Vitamin regiment but it was tearing my stomach all to hell and "plugging me up" TMI.... Sorry, trying to be helpful here. Vitamin D was a "HUGE" help for me though, and I take 500mg a day in the winter. My family has been riddled with it and the only other thing I can say is even though it's tough to do, tell her to "KEEP MOVING"!!!

Absolutely Greenstick we are all here for you to lend an ear to and vent. I vented on here in the past about my struggles with my current housing situation. We picked up and moved into a bigger house, well long story short I hate it. Noisy and entirely too much traffic. I still walk around with a heavy heart over making this mistake but I suck it up and move on best I can for now.

I understand what you mean about family and being in Dakotah Territory, it's a very difficult situation. If wasn't for family I would have left NJ awhile back.

Take your time, think it all through, talk it all out! One thing that stuck with me after I walked around kicking myself and not forgiving myself for making my current move was remembering that.............. nothing is forever and your going to make mistakes, need to forgive yourself. While making a move somewhere only to have to move back after a period of time isn't ideal and can be painful but it can be done. I know many folks that moved, didn't work out and few years later moved back. Nothing is forever!!

I am RA, less osteo, lived in arid states, feel changes in barometric pressure but not humidity. All I know is that I've been in chicago and stockton cal in the winter a few times and the cold was MISERABLE compared to the cold out here for me. Even at 40* in a dry state when there is no wind or breeze and the sun is out, one can go outside comfortably.

Same as WeldrDave , both myself and hubby were encouraged to take over the counter 5000mcg's of vitamin D here, by our different doctors. Love the small hot tub idea, maybe savemoney will chime in, there are special lamps that give off a particular light that helps the psychy (which relates to pain relief). Maybe replace your standard tub with a jetted bathtub, hang a SADD light in there on high and see if she likes hanging out for awhile. Let her choose whatever she likes, a book or magazine or radio show and turn the jet in the tub on :)
