Yes, they could pivot and make models that do sell. Most suvs are really crossovers, and are essentially lifted taller roofed cars. Those sell and wouldn't take much to convert a production line. Now since gm took Bailout money then shuttered parts of other plants to get the same 5 plants going that are now going to shutter... That makes it extra infuriating.

When gm took bailout money a few years back, I knew guys that were gm fans that said they'd never but a gm again. This is just "extra".

 

Except it appears that Ford isn't shuttering plants. They are making the suvs/ crossovers there. There's more details to be ironed out, but it sounds like they are doing nothing as drastic to the workers like gm is.

 

The plant is Oshawa is the only GM plant that can make either cars or trucks from what I have read. Also read the other day that they said they want to concentrate on electric vehicles but one or more of the plants they are closing in the US makes electric cars. I am far from an expert but seems to me they are lying about something....they seem to be as shifty as a company can be.

 

So one of my co-workers is a big Government Motors fan...blew his stack when they took the bailout, said he'd not buy GM again...yeah, whatever, he's bought 2 new ones since then

Dumping the Fusion and keeping the focus. I'll have to push harder for an SUV when I'm due for my next company car.

 

That's still in flux. The "focus active" was going to be imported from China iirc. That sounds like it may be scuttled due to tarriffs. There's talk of a fusion based SUV. Isn't the Edge really in that size already? The new explorer is already being seen testing in camo.

Then again there's the new ranger already being made, the new bronco, and the new baby bronco, as well as a few other models. A 4 door mustang maybe the way a new regular sedan gets introduced.

When you get a new vehicle, you might have a choice between an SUV, or a mustang sedan.

 

My truck is a 97 and my daily is a 2000. New rigs are crazy expensive.

 

GM quitting production of Volt there was an article on that last week somewhere. GM as well as GE moved almost all there RD to China a few years back- that has to be biting them in the backside about now. Just about all the bigger names had units that were to be made in China and then imported to the states. Those that were specific to the states have mostly been canceled at this point. Did you know that all that lovely safety stuff adds between 800 to 1500 lbs to a designated stateside model.

They also have those American factories in China aND they get around their import tariffs that they place on US made vehicles like our chicken tax by making them there. They love our vehicles supposedly. I think I heard it was a status symbol.

 

So here's one way that buying a half ton dieded would make more sense.

Talk about a bonus!! A truck that gets amazing mileage and years after you bought it you get about half of the cost of the engine option back in a check!

 

depends on how many repairs you have had done in between. saw an article recently that there is a major major problem lurking ( cam timing slippage) with that diesel, that is just now showing up , seems to be about 70k miles for self destruct point. Not official, but shades of the Ford and Gm cam timing problem. Course neither Ford or GM labeled it as a design problem per say , various tb's issued though. This an interference eng. therefore timing off -valves crashing into pistons- never a good end result. First signs hard or no start. This is an Italian diesel not a Cummins.

 

Cummins and the DOE developed a v6 diesel (and v8) 12 years ago for the 1/2 ton market then FCA Fiat got their hands in it and decided their VM Motori diesel was a better fit (read cheaper).
Had they stuck with Cummins, they wouldnt have this problem. And could likely sell 10x as many 1/2 ton diesels.

Cummins is still the leader in the torque wars...

 

Exactly. VM Motori is best known for Lancia engines. They were great when they ran.....

 

The Cummins currently makes 930 lb ft of tq, and the Ford super duty diesel currently makes 935 lb ft of torque.

Not that anyone is counting though. Lol

 

You'd have to pay me a lot more than that to purchase a Chrysler product.
