This week has been one of record lows in RI. The wood stove has been chugging along with the Envi blocks and keeping the house nice and toasty. There is just something inviting about walking into the house where a wood stove is burins. It's like being wrapped in a blanket as your take your jacket, hat and gloves off. Completely different than the hot air that is blown around from forced hot air or even the stale heat from from forced hot water. Nothing compares to it in my book. I long for the long stretches of real cold when we can fire up the wood stove and really crank it. Most days living just over a mile as the crow flies from the ocean in southern RI we get in the 40's where you don't want the wood stove cranking all day long. Unless I am home during the day, we'll let it go out during the day and you come home to a cold house. Lite the fire for overnight. Rinse and repeat. Not when we get a significant cold spell like this. No, I get to really fire it up. Normally on our stove I set the air control to the second to last line. This week I've been able to go to third and fourth line. When we walk out of our bedroom and head down the hall, we are met with the warm air in the playroom. That is a result of the wood stove running strong 24X7. Normally you have to go another 15 feet in the house to get the inviting feel. We don't have a very open floor plan for the heat to travel. Hoping that we continue to see more cold this winter.
Agreed there is a great feeling about a home that's heated with wood. Very comforting and satisfying indeed. Our stove here in MN. has been going strong for over two months. Not always 24-7 it goes out while at work . But then fired up again for the night shift.
The best thing about wood heat...is not feeling guilty for being warm. There's no bill to pay for being warm. That's what makes cutting firewood so enjoyable.
We've been below normal temperature now for weeks; maybe 2 months, but nothing record breaking. Yes, wood heat is super!!!!
Right on TurboDiesel ! I love it when people come in & say it's so nice & warm in here. I can work & live in comfort & not have to worry about paying the gas or oil man, unlimited hot water, & no worries about someone turning up a thermostat. Being well ahead on firewood & picking my days to cut based on weather is a real bonus too.
It's also gratifying to know that you aren't paying ransom to an entrenched monopoly. I also prefer that hot blast off the top of the stove to the tepidly warm air blowing gently from the registers.
Just a stones throw from you in SE CT and with the insert I like days with a high in the 30’s lows in the teens. Can 24/7 burn and not be too warm.
That's why we work hard all year but we sure enjoy it in the winter while most people have to spend over $2,000 just to heat the house with oil
I hope not a repeat of last year. Started out with record or near-record cold and then stayed cold thru May.
I've had snow on the ground since November 7th , so we are definitively colder-than-normal. My house is warm and I'm quite used to walking around in a T-shirt. Just hoping for a spring, as fall went from 85 to 40 and rain. In 2 weeks, to snow.
