When I find a piece, I'll stuff up this thread, post a pic and do the test, as well as compare it to a split of sugar maple I have here that's all prepared for the "wood off" . Lol

Lol nothing like a good wood burn off! I think it will be similar. Honestly looks like black maple. Sounds like gooder fun anyway. Norway tends to look a lot like ash to me. Burns better than ash though.

Yeah, I have a what I believe it's a Norway maple in my yard, . I've never really burned any of it though. It sure looks like one.

That looks a lot like yard grown Norway to me. I've seen it with the stained inside, primarily when its had branches removed and that piece has the scar from a branch being removed.

It definitely was a yard tree, that I'm sure of that.

That actually would tip the scales in favor more of it being Norway maple. Size fits too for the age to be right for planting in the 70s when it was popular to do so.

Here are 3 splits of the maple I have in my stacks that was a yard tree brought to me by a tree service.

My fingernails cannot dent it. It's heavy, I'd say as heavy as the sugar maple (attempting to compare pieces that are different sized) that I have here by the hearth, cut about the same time, 2 Winters ago. It's definitely much heavier than the silver maple that I have that I processed this early summer.

IDK, it burns great after being CSS'd 2 Winters ago. That's all I care about. :)

That's the important thing and I wish you the joy of it my firewood brother! If its heavy like hard maple and you can't dent it with your nail it's probably black maple. Walks like a duck quacks like a duck must be a duck. Norway would have been somewhat lighter and a bit softer.
