Got a maple that had four stems, two of which are twisted up and giving me a little trouble developing a cut plan. It's been so wet lately that I'm reduced to 'making plans'. Note the water flow in the pictures. Part of the reason these trees are coming out...so I can better manage this drainage with some culvert/swail/rock. Gotta clear all the trees and stumps before dirt work. I'm not sure if I should go low and n the stump and get both, or try to take them individually? Looking at the picture, how would you proceed?
I do have access to 'reactionary rifle targets', but sadly the local hardware place no longer sells dynamite.
I like to get them individually if possible but not always possible. If not, you can chain them together or ratchet strap them.
I would do as Savage has suggested. I would ratchet strap them and then fall the tree as just one unit. Make the face cut low.
Now we’re talkin. Some 12 gauge slugs will chop it down. Wanna speed the process up slit the rounded crimp off the shell. Slit it enough to remove the slug and reinsert backwards. It’ll open up like a frying pan on contact. LOL
That was gonna be my suggestion as well. Get your rigging rope or cable high enough and choke them together (multiple wraps with a crossover), apply tension to them in the direction you want them felled, and careful do the task. just make sure you're comfortable tackling the job before you commit....once you start cutting, you can't turn back....
If you have tractor put chain or rope around as high as possible and pull you might get roots and all out with it being so close to water. I did a big Poplar with come-along and managed to get roots and all out was easy just a little slow as always had to shorten the chain but had stump out in the end which was a plus
They are not to big luckily, but safety is number one. Heck the little to the right and then cut the larger of the two whichever direction it wants to go. Come alongs can pull them any direction you want as well. Be safe
Thank You All for the suggestions. Luckily, I don't often run into these situations. Liking Savage's strap idea. Someone else I asked suggested setting up the smaller trunk to almost fall, then use the larger stem to push it on over. I will likely be setting them up to come straight at the camera in picture 1 as there are no crowns of other trees in the way.
