Yep, i would say its a bit pooched, but with some nice shiny parts should be able to get it going again
How does the bottom end look?

the mtronic auto tune will compensate for a small air leak even one that size

Is it possible that there was some warranty work done to it in the past, and forgot that bolt?
Looks like a not real great design with no hold down bolt on that side
Maybe ran hot and lost some tension on the bolts causing air leak?

Kinda like a modern car, can be pretty messed up air/fuel wise and still run decent, only thing to warn you is light in dash
Didn't know auto tune could tune for that large of a leak given cc of engine

There shouldn’t be any schmootz in the sealing surface area between the gasket and the cylinder. There is. Is there was room for that, there is room for air. I didn’t consider the mating surfaces weren’t flat. And may be out on a limb, but that muffler design may help secure the part of the carb where there aren’t any hold down bolts. My first assumption was it wasn’t clean when made up.
Looks flat enough for a gasket to fix anything that might be there.

How about front to back? I would say the 4 cylinder bolts should be plenty to hold that area very tight. Any chance someone before you cracked the cyl off and that's how the gasket got dirty?

Who knows if previous owner "played" with it. Maybe watched a few videos, got to a certain point and in over his head and figured turf it for beer money?

i dont think the gasket had anything to do with it
dirt and oil is normal under a muffler if it has any time on it
i personally think the op is reading way to much into it and ive already said what happened to the saw
and as he stated the previous owner had a story he wouldnt tell

Probably am reading too much into it. But I can’t get passed the dirt in the sealing area. Doesn’t much matter at this point. Moving on.

Piston off,( the other circlip was there, I was too blind to see it) and I’ve come across a jerky crank.

I’ve never opened up a 550xp or anything with stuffers. I hoping this is normal. But I can’t understand why it would be.
    Opinions on this.

From looking at it, I see dirt on the gasket(around the strato ports) like it was there when they reinstalled the cylinder, pinching the dirt. And I think that's what he's considering a spot to leak air. Also why I wanted to see a straight edge on the base. Maybe I was reading wrong?
But I do agree, the outter edge of the gasket, where it would stick out, would get very dirty with use.

I totally vote straight gas on what I see. Clean up the cyl, new piston/rings and you are probably off and running. Press/vac test will tell for sure..
