I hear you on the necessity of doing the repairs your self. With shop time averaging over 100.00 an hour here it pays to take care of it if you can.

Just got an email from firewoodhoardersclub.com letting me know that there was an update to this thread, so here I am checking it out. One interesting thing is that "bullchiting" was autocorrected to something else in the email.

That is definitely the key to running older vehicles. If you can do the simple repairs and some of the not simple ones you can really come out ahead in the long run.

An "s" was swapped in for the "c". Thought it was kind of odd. Must have something to do with the software as i find it hard to believe that yahoo mail would autocorrect something I receive.

Having a cold Samuel Adams Octoberfest before bed and after getting maybe half way through the install of the Pellet Stove. I don't know if I like this Octoberfest better than the Yeaungling Octoberfest. I think the later one. Of course, I had more beers in me when I had that one too.

Raining here again. I won't be doing any fun work with the Bobcat. All the areas I need to work in will be way too soft.

Timing chains and belts, avg life( with out getting too sloppy) 100k miles. Ya I know plenty of units out there with a lot more miles than that oem parts. Rebuttal is that on the newer units of which a lot are interference designed engines a little too much slopp and you start smacking valves and pistons together. Let it go to long and you end up with a very expensive repair bill. If you have a ticking sound that seems to come and go chances are its the timing system. On a side note try not to vary from the oem oil weight specs, most of the engines have been lightend up so far that oil passages are extremely small and the heavier oils will have difficulty passing through in the required quantities, or in the case of overhead cams some of which are only splash lubricated, a heavier oil provides insufficient lubrication to same.

I'm with you on belts, 100k for sure. I've never seen a recent design chain engine that actually had a stated service interval.

My wife went away for the weekend. I told her I'd have dinner ready when she comes home. I made ham and veggies in the CP.
