New type of fire(water)starter? Powdered Alcohol Gets U.S. Government Approval Friday, Apr 18, 2014, by Erin DeJesus Excellent news for those who hate alcohol in its natural, liquid form: Industry blog BevLaw reports the U.S. Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau has given the go-ahead to Palcohol, a patent-pending powered alcohol brandthat offers seven varieties of powered spirits. The product comes in rum and vodka form, as well as in mixed drink flavors like Cosmopolitan, Lemon Drop, and Kamikaze (in which powdered spirits are packaged with "natural flavors" for a just-add-water instant cocktail). On a cached version of its official website, Palcohol founders offer several "possibilities" for its product: Bring the discrete Palcohol packets into venues that usually overcharge for booze (like concerts, cruise ships, and sporting events), and simply add water to make a "real" cocktail. There are also unlimited opportunities for garnishing foodwith Palcohol: "Some of our favorites are the Kamikaze in guacamole, Rum on a BBQ sandwich, Cosmo on a salad and Vodka on eggs in the morning to start your day off right." The website also acknowledges that snorting Palcohol is a possibility, but encourages users to not "do anything stupid with it." An updated version of the site announces the product will be available by Fall 2014.
You knew it was just a matter of time before this came out. Alcohol in its original form is one thing but imagine the combinations folks can create with powdered alcohol and all sorts of other drugs and non drugs. Funny, this is the place I first hear if this, not the news or some other major media.
I am going to have to ask my son the chemist about this, don't sound right to me. That's like saying I am going to sell powdered gasoline, just add water an put in your car tank- ????? Think of the storage solutions that would resolve and maybe unlimited shelf life ect. Course new stuff pops up all the time, but this has a bit of an lingering scent to it for me.
I can see this giving some people the idea that they can "drink" more of this stuff and get away with it. Working under the influence, driving under the influence. The potential is there that many foolish people will think they will be able to get away with it because you don't see the bottle. I wonder if it will still have the "smell".
I'm pretty sure ethanol does not have a dry state. This must be a compound, probably with sugar or some other starch, that binds or encapsulates the ethanol so it can be powdered. I would think snorting would be pretty unpleasant.
