hey everyone, so I wake up this morning, power is out. house is 68*. I quickly realize I need to fire up the generator and get the owb back online putting heat into the house and shop. but as I'm putting on the long johns, and preparing for a long cold day of running extension cords, plowing driveways, fueling the fire, buying gasoline, and cutting wood. I stood, for a moment, staring out the window, at a world that has been completely changed in 8 short hours. from a cold rainy mess. to a beautiful, white covered, palace. that has almost been forgotten of since its been so long... upon the initial "wow factor" I remember that being without electricity is a bad thing, and much work will need to be done to preserve life, (with the creature comforts I enjoy anyways)

I know there is many out there who say "just burn in a wood stove and you wont have any problems with loosing power" but the owb is right for me, and I wouldn't go back to a stove to save my life.

that being said, am I the only one who enjoys the overnight transformation of every thing they are accustomed to? it seems like most ppl hate winter. however I think its pretty cool!!!! I like the snow, I like working in it, playing in it, and I like how it can completely isolate me from the rest of the world. call me crazy. maybe i'm different. what do you think?

Judging by your love of it, you don't get any where near enough of snow in order to get sick of it!

    Case in point.....
A girl from Hawaii attended MTU in Houghton Mi would dance around in the first few snowfalls bubbling all over with joy and happiness as the snow gently fell to earth blanketing everything with it's white majesty. This was in October. By December and after only a couple months of failing and shortening daylight hours, dropping temperatures and relentless snowfall demanding the removal of snow every time you stepped outside (whether it be from your clothing, boots, sidewalks or vehicle.....she would walk around in a daze with her eyes glazed over just staring at the ground looking for stable footing so as not to slip. The fall semester is the only one she attended.

Valid theory for the first few snows..........................after that it gets old real fast. Don't know where you are, but up here the 1st snow we get each year is still kissing the ground in April, usually under a couple of feet of it's predecessors. It loses it's appeal real quick.

I still have my wood stove hooked up in the basement from when I burned wood indoors so I could fire it up if I had to. I like you would not want to be without my owb. We have radiant floor heat in the house & are spoiled!
I can totally relate to what you said about the beauty of fresh fallen snow & the winter season. For me it means no allergies, no pesky insects, & none of that lousy stinkin humidity that seems to suck the life/ energy right outta me. Winter weather is invigorating to me, I have much more energy although I have been noticing the last several winters that I’m unable to keep my fingers & toes as warm as I used to.

Well, for me it's love/hate relationship

It's beautiful no doubt, I love to see a fresh covering, see it blanketing the trees in the hillside.

Then I get to clean off the vehicle, plow the driveway, just so I can go to my "happy place" also known as a 4 letter word called "work".
    o_O

Don't get me wrong, that's another love/hate relationship as well.

I like my job, and I'm glad I have it, but dayum it gets old some days.
    :hair:

But, winter often is my time to relax a bit and recharge, as it is for much of nature.

Then there's the happiness of spring, when it starts to warm back up, and the green returns.

    Meh.. each season has pros/cons
    :tears:

I don’t mind the snow, but I don’t like the slop (like this past weekend - the snow starts to melt, ground turns to mud, turns cold again, mud freezes, wash rinse repeat). I’d much prefer the snow to come and stay until spring.

I like snow. When it’s gone. And June. And September.
    That is all.

I’m a fan of the snow under the right circumstances. Today it was great, woke up and found out the office was closed due to no phone and internet. My boys had a snow day as well so we cleared the driveway and then got out the snowmobiles. Spent the day outside playing.

Hate the snow when I have deal with knuckleheads on the rode driving in it.

As long as it's not mind numbingly cold, I truly enjoy winter. Is a nasty blizzard fun? No, but a normal storm is so beautiful and peaceful. I can sit for hours and watch it fall. One thing I used to love was how quiet the snow would make the world. Now I live in the woods, and that's every day life.

I hate shoveling, but enjoy plowing snow. I don't do more than my, and a few neighbors driveways these days, but I put my 4yo daughter in the front seat and we have fun.

Well, the 2"-3" pretty snow that we got yesterday afternoon easily doubled! (Those snowflakes must breed like rats!) So, I have the opportunity to go enjoy the tranquility once again this morning. This will make the third time, so far this week, that I've had to put the shovel down....and I already skipped one time!

Yeah, it looks nice. Yeah, it is relaxing. Yeah, it's above zero.....that's always very good!

I do enjoy looking at a beautiful fresh snow. But from my nice warm house. I can't take the cold anymore. I don't even like AC.

Why not have the best of both worlds? Use it occasionally or when it's really bitter cold out and need some extra heat!!

You are not alone, snow can be absolutely beautiful, especially those 1st few snows! Our house backs to the woods and when it's snow covered I pinch myself as it is just breathtaking!! But like many have said it can get old really....really quick and I don't even get much snow!! Having to drive in it to and from work, drop kids off to school, schools buses driving in it, shoveling off the cars, clearing the property of snow, allowing time to warm the car up to defrost the windows and not be late for work, etc... is really a PITA when you have to do it constantly. But I can relate to how you feel about being isolated from the rest of the world. One of my dream vacations is to rent a home in the middle of a snow covered nowhere, just to enjoy the peace and tranquility and the beauty of it. If I lived out in the country and say worked from home or not far from home and wasn't in a populated suburban area of the country I perhaps would have a different outlook on it because then I would be able to enjoy it fully.

I enjoy all four season and look forward to each one of them. Not sure I would ever want to be in a place with to much of one season!!

I used to look forward to the first snowstorm and enjoyed the first plowing and shoveling out.

Now that my bum ankles make skiing anything but the bunny slopes impossible and outdoor Winter activity pretty much means cutting firewood, not so much with the snow. I can do the cold, just would prefer no snow.
I'd rather be closer to the equator in the Winter if I could.
