With the impending blizzard (and the end of normal civilization per my southern states originating neighbors) I decided to clean my chimney yesterday. With the early cold this year I had not done it yet. So after cleaning out the flue and stove (3 broken tiles!) I gave the cap a spray with oven cleaner and after all the shine of the stainless steel returned put it back on. I noticed this morning that no one else who's a wood burner in my area seems to care...and all there caps are various stains off black or brown.
Am I the only one who likes a clean cap? IMG_20181124_180511.jpg

One fire will turn it brown/black again. I don't have the energy for that.

I don't bother cleaning mine. As long as the cap and flue are not obstructed in any way, I'm good.

As long as my wire mesh is not restricted...it will wait until flue cleaning time..

I had noticed some staining around the to of the stack on the OWB this past year. Yeah, I know, I know.......one of those nasty smoldering tire and railroad tie burning smoke filling up the river valley OWBs!

Guess what? Without any attention to it, halfway through summer, it was spic and span just like brand new! Shinning from top to bottom with no trace what-so-ever of the pre-mentioned stain!

Cmon you got it off anyway. Might as well take 10 minutes to blast it with oven cleaner!

Every time I'm on the roof to run the brush, i run out of daylight. I seem to every only have just enough time to run the brush, then put the cap back on. Then fire up the stove again. This Fall I had to take the duct tape off of the chimney from the crown repair, so that added a little time.

The dome stays clean ... It's that ring between the two disks that gets ugly .
