The 2018 season is over for me and my dad. He shot a fork horn on the 25th, and I got this one in the 31st. I had the option to also hunt the late muzzleloader season later this month, but the areas open for that aren't my favorite. So getting this guy on the afternoon if the last day of modern firearm was perfect.
I shot him at 30 yards and only knew he was a legal buck at the time because a branch was obstructing my view if his antlers. This is only the 2nd buck i taken with my .243. It wouldn't be my 1st caliber choice if I was buying a new rifle, but I inherited this one and hunt with it from time to time. This year I carried the .243 exclusively.
Not much sign of the rut until we saw a few rubs on the 30th. On the 31st it was like someone flipped a switch over night and things were all tore up. This was the stinkiest, most rutted up buck I've killed in a long time. Screenshot_20181031-161730.jpeg Screenshot_20181031-201939.jpeg

Very nice buck blacktail ! We very little deer movement for most of the season also. Seems like last two days things changed. We ended up with 2 spikes for 3 guys. Never saw any big boys. Third guy will have to wait for late season!

We had 6 or 7 different bucks on camera through the summer. As always, the number of pics tapered off at the end of summer. Every single deer pic our camera got from about mid September to October 31st was at night.

My dad got the rack mounted up for me. I made the board from one of the maple trees I had cut down in January.

Very nice! Like the eye guards, many blacktails do not have eye guards!
