We are headed to my cousins as usual. My dad goes to his girlfriends for dinner, and then joins us at for desert. This year at my cousins there will only be around 22 of us. Which is a very low number. Normally we are around 45. This year one group of our family is down at Disney, and another group is off to another part of their family for the first time. At least it will not be as difficult to get a seat.
We're going about ten miles to one of the nieces. I cook the turkey. I used to make ricotta cheesecake and pie(s) but some of the younger kids have gotten into making desserts so we defer to them.
I make an incredible pumpkin cheesecake, hasn't really been of interest in the past few years though.
The one I make isn't too heavy with the pumpkin flavor. Dinner with my moms family there literally wouldn't be any left. Then dinner with the inlaws family it would barely get touched. Mom told the family to F themselves and host their own 30+ person dinner after an uncle giving her crap one year, so no more xmas dinner at moms. Especially now that she moved two hours away.
No plans for turkey. Not any family really left around here. Just planing on running the stove (supposed to be a high of 20 f) having some home made wine and some back straps and a pumpkin pie with whipped cream on top. The cat like venison and whipped cream, so I will share with him. I miss family, but it's a nice time for self reflection and a way to count the blessings I do have.
Home made wine? Very cool. Holidays and family can be a two edge sword. Death and distance (physical and emotional) can make it sad at times. But hopefully memories and as you said, reflecting on the gifts we do have, can warm a person's heart. You enjoy your day shack
I make some awesome dark dry red wine...also make a little something called Grappa, that is some special stuff.
I've made it similar to this https://lidiasitaly.com/recipes/italian-cheesecake/ but with Amaretto instead of rum ( and a little bit more than 3 tablespoons ).
Working, just like every Thanksgiving for the last 16 years. It's my favorite day of the year at work because so much of the place is shut down.
I'm off Thursday but have to work Friday and Saturday, my days off are Sunday and mondays. I plan on going to my mothers for lunch and my inlaws for dinner. We make Turkey but we also roast a lamb as well. I'm thankful for my family and every day I wake up. Thankful that my family is healthy and thankful for this FHC family even though I never met any of you guys but you guys have the biggest hearts and are always looking to help others. You dont see much of that these days..enjoy your Thanksgiving all and God bless you and your families always. Stay warm and hoard on..
I'm in the same situation . Both my parents and GFs parents have passed away. My sister and GFs sisters are all drama queens trying to run our lives so they won't be invited. It will be us, 2 of her 3 kids, a grand baby and the dog. It will be a quiet thanksgiving and that's fine with me.
Used to go to my nieces, but she got ill and won't be cooking, they will go to my other nieces who is too far away for me to travel (night driving back not so great for me). So I am keeping under the radar as not to get any "pity invitations", and am planning to clean up pine needles, cut fallen limbs, move damm wet wood underneath, and having myself a ham with mashed potatoes, corn and green beans I canned from last year. And I have a Dutch apple cake in the freezer I made from this years apples! Looking forward to working outside without rain and mud for a change. I am so grateful it has stopped raining, and that I can fend for myself! p.s.--Wish I had gotten turkey, I want to make dressing waffles with turkey and gravy for breakfast--but then, who ever heard of leftover dressing??
