Yes. So many times in life you just can't roll over and follow "advice" (or follow the crowd).......when you know it isn't right. This applies to every aspect of life.
Sloppy burning is what got them banned here ( all the complaints when it comes right down to it ) They're banned pretty much completely in my town. About ten years ago the state came down hard on OWBs. Only newer more efficient ones could be sold and even old ones had to be modified to meet new rules. SOme of the new rules were to address smoke drifting into neighbors yards. No operating an OWB between 15May and 15October if you have neighbors within 500 feet of it and if your existing OWB was closer than 150 feet to another dwelling the chimney has to be higher than that dwelling's roof. So if your neighbor's house was 35 feet tall your OWB's chimney had to be 35+ feet tall. You might get past the Town's ordinances by pleading to the State, but that takes time and
It does over a year or so, but then I'm stacking new wood to be dated. So I just go over the old sharpie markings, it only takes two minutes. Three minutes if I'm holding a beer.
You realize that the use by / burn by dates stamped on the wood are just a ploy by the firewood retailers /dealers to get you to throw it out don't you? Then of course you have to buy more. I know of folks who have burned wood a year past it's use by date, it burned fine.
I'd smell it, if it didn't smell right, I'd toss it. You don't want to take a chance with spoiled wood.
Thanks, good advice! Today I was splitting black oak and black locust and I didn't care for how either one smelled. Tomorrow it's all going right out to the curb and I'm gonna tip the sanitation men if they agree to take it.
Well I am serious about the smell. I have almost a full cord of split black oak against my neighbors privacy fence. I split it a month ago and it still smells like I have a cow pasture in my back yard. The smell is almost gone though but I got some more since then and split that today. It smells but not as bad. I don't know what that other tree was eating????
That theory applies to many things in life for a lot of people unfortunately. I guess it’s easier being willfully ignorant? There are many things people don’t “like” to hear but should. Laziness has a lot to do with it. People don’t want to know the facts, just what’s most convenient. That might be fine for them, or so they think, but it tends to spoil it for those that do it right. Ignorance is not bliss for anyone, it hurts everyone because people in power make decisions based on that ignorance every day, and we all pay for it. Makes one want to move to Alaska but I doubt you’ll escape it there either. Ok, rant over
And stupid will be on full display this black Friday in the form of fistfights over TV's or whatever.
