My other thread turned out to be Sassafras. So what is this one? Don't think I've ever seen this before. This one has some dark stringy stuff under the bark.
Wow, have I stumped the wood-a-haulics??? WOW!! We are all over the map: Black Walnut, Elm, Scarlet Oak..... ! The dark area of the grain is almost purple in color, interesting grain, with a regular yellowish outer layer.
Yeah, purple, I say Walnut. Have some Walnut boards I bought many years ago for a future project that hasn't yet presented itself.....it has a purpleish color.
Thanks..... Smell usually helps you guys. I split some of this, and it has a very "deep dark" smell to it, almost like coffee bean before ground.... Still walnut?

I dug out a few splits of that from my pile last night and thought it was elm too, didn't burn so great.
Why is that? I thought Walnut is a high BTU wood, no? Seems rock hard and dense, similar to Black locust. I'd think it has a nice long burn....
Hard yes...that's why it makes good furniture (and its purdy)...but its not necessarily dense (heavy)...that's what makes long burning wood. When dry it won't weigh near as much as oak.
