A 1200sf, early 70's, 3 bedroom ranch with a 300sf addition on the back. "Normal" winters we use about 4 cord. We heat with a Baker FPI in the living room and an old box stove in the addition. Normally the Baker takes care of the entire house with the help of a couple strategically placed fans but it just couldn't keep up this winter so we had to employ the box stove. Honestly, I don't know what size the stoves are. The Baker has a fairly large firebox and I have no problem getting a 12 hour burn time. The box stove is smaller and gets 6-7 hours depending on what type of wood I have in it. I should also add that about 1/2-3/4 of a cord was used in the shed when I was out there working on a couple projects. It has no insulation so I was always running it hot just so my fingers would work.
I haven't quite finished burning yet, but as a rough estimate I'll be at around 8-8.5 full cord. Now keep in mind, that's TWO stoves that, for the most part, ran NON - STOP for several months due to excessive cold temps. We use wood as our sole heat source. I am pleased with those results considering our house is close to 3,000sq.ft., and never dropped below 70-72° all winter long........ There is still some room for efficiency improvements, especially on the NZ3000......I'll keep you posted when I so the mods.
I'm gonna say probably 6 to 6.5. I pulled from two different stacks so its hard to say for sure. I probably burned 50 gallons of propane for heat as well. Probably 1/3 hedge, 1/3 black locust, and 1/3 oak. That's a lot of BTUs.
I see where your coming from. I'm the same in the regards of having an addition and the main stove (my Oslo) having trouble keeping up in the really cold times. I have a Jotul 602 as my second stove, like your box stove. I usually run shoulder wood through that one because the firebox is so small. How well is your home insulated? How are your windows? Is it drafty as well? Older doors and decent weatherstripping??
About 4 burning 24/7, up from closer to 3 cords last year. About a cord plus of this years' was soft maple, pine, and of course, ailanthus.
Ail, a question aside from your cord total. I see you burn with a Jotul Castine , are you getting decent burn times with it? I'm told the Castine is the smaller version of the Oslo. The reason I ask is my Oslo has had trouble with burn times the last two years and I'm in the process with Jotul to find some answers. Kinda just asking around Thanks
Whoops. I guess I didn't realize there was more than one Dave. I should have said BogyDave.... He is about 10 miles from me so more or less has the same weather. I was counting "junk" wood too in my overall usage. I burned about 2 small truck loads of "junk".
Burned everything I had and then some (7-8 cords). Felled 10 small standing dead oaks around my property in the last month to get us by. Heating 2100 sf with osburn 2200 insert. During the coldest days our house temp was only around 63 degrees burning 24 hrs. a day. The good news is the propane company came by a few weeks ago to put a lock on my tank because they thought I must be getting propane from another company because I didn't order any propane since last year. Burned over 3000 worth last year and 400.00 this year ! I LOVE WOOD.
12. Up until mid January I though I would have made it with 8 cords, but the cord never stopped. To put it in perspective, last winter was very mild and I went through 12 cords. So, the insulation helped. More to come this summer. My goal is 8 cords during a good winter.
Just under 4 cords heating 2500 sqft. First year at the new house so no previous counts to go by. Wood was seasoned just one year so it should get better from here on out.
Has been a very mild winter here! With full time heating of the house and domestic hot water, the consumption figure is very often controlled by the length of the long spring shoulder season. With storage we are now going around 60 hours between firings so I am looking at 4 cords this year. When I say cords, I am talking 128 cubic ft. Seems to be good insulation and the windows were fairly new when we got here. The threshold and weather stripping on the door between the garage and the kitchen is in rough shape; something I hadn't noticed until this brutal winter. I'll have to address that this year. The sliding door in the addition seems to vent a bit as well. I'll be taking a closer look at that too.
Somewhere between 7-8 cord. 1300sqft house built in the 20's. Windows have been updated but it could use some better insulation and some drafts looked at. Oh and my stoves's in the basement. The old volcano furnace sucked up some wood this winter! . I normally don't burn any oil but this winter was brutal so i turned the thermostat on a few times when the stove just couldn't keep up Burned about 40 gallons of oil
I lost track but think I'm at about 6-7cord, I know what I had going into this year but sold a decent bit and restocked some where I had pulled from.
The burn times are decent, but not great. It's not a problem for me because someone is home most of the time. It does have trouble keeping up when temps are below 10, but it's working well overall for me. Many, many times,though, I've wished I'd gotten the oslo, or even the f600.
