This week has been cold enough to run the stove 24/7. When I get up in the morning there is enough coals to stoke the fire easily and bring the stove up to temp quickly. Same thing when I get home in the evening. I have thought about the past when I would struggle with poorly seasoned wood to ignite and low heat output. Thanks to the forum I am burning wood that has been seasoned for 3 years and it is so easy to maintain temps with less effort. I have high temps with little or no flame and no smoke coming out of the chimney. The basement stove hasn’t been lit this season. It was cool in the basement so I thought I would fire it up. In the past I have struggled with basement chimney reverse draft issues and having smoke in the basement when I first light the stove. Today I did a top down fire and used a propane torch to get the draft going before I lit the fire. After the fire was going I turned on the fan and checked air flow with a piece of tissue paper hanging from the doorway. Thanks for all the info, knowledge, specs and banter. FHC has been great.
Lots of knowledgeable folks here who are more than willing to share their knowledge with the rest of the membership.
Your set up is SWEET! I too am having a much better burn thanks to more seasoned wood. And I have 2 1/2 more years of wood in my yard. How sweet it is!
For sure, I had guy tell me it was great I put in my outdoor boiler so I could burn green wood. Just shook my head. Green wood doesn't make heat in an owb either.
Such a widely held belief. Just no science that even remotely supports that nonsense. I have 2 buddies with OWB. Both completely brainwashed. Smokey, creo drippn mess that pizzus off the neihbors at both places. Geeeeez. Um.....Duh!
Yeah Tim, sadly I've heard that from a couple "stove" guys too. Dry wood burns up too fast they said. I loaded some 14" Pine rounds in mine that had been sitting for two years, thought I'd see how they do. 15 min later I got that nasty creosote smell coming from the stack. End of experiment LOL. Not a lot of smoke, but the stench was bad, no way! Split the rest of the rounds & stacked em back up. It may burn it, but I don't wanna smell it.
Heck of a resource for firewood’n isn’t it OhioStihl Good to hear you have it working in your favor now.
