That's terrible Sue. I feared this might happen to a lot of eastern dweller this year after all the rain. Yet I still find it hard to believe the wood got that wet from the side. I'm betting there were some bad spots in the tarp. But this does not help you now. I am all for the buying of some bricks to assist you in the burning. Hopefully that would allow you to continue burning wood rather than gas. Good luck.
No bad spots. Lots of wind with the rain, the one smaller, driest stack was covered on three sides (top, two short sides, and back was facing the shed) and it still absorbed a lot of liquid. Funny, some of it looks dry, but still is heavy. My heart goes out to my fellow East Coast Burners, This is just a SUCKY year, like UncleJoe and ED 3000 said! It seems to rain every weekend, and I don't get home until dark. This weekend, I was out of town visiting. I had earmarked Monday and Tuesday for work outside, as I was off. Guess what it did??? And guess what is coming this weekend???
I too still have a lot of dry looking heavy splits. I'm just rooting through my wood bin and grabbing a few dry splits for the bottom, then putting a few heavier splits on top. Leave the door cracked and let em hiss for about 10 minutes before locking it down. Not ideal, but it is what it is. I will say that 18 days after bringing all the wood on the porch, its definitely much better than it was at first.
Sad thing is, that same wood was perfect last year! I just didn't burn it all. Good thing I was able to move a lot into car-porch and rubbermaid shed.
We are in the same boat. Wood is sheltered but some rain and moisture still gets on it. A little sizzle is audible on just about anything I am bringing in from outside. If I leave it near the fire it dries the surface moisture.. First good freeze should drive off what's left.
I am hoping that, too... It is dark when I get home, but I will try to safely move the rest of the leftover 2015 under cover tonight. So far we are up to 60 inches total. I appreciate all the support and hints!
Update—Good news, when I moved the stack last night, there was a lot of dry wood in the center! I sorted it and it looks promising. I stacked the wood cris-cross on the car-porch as suggested, so hopefully in a few weeks it will be useable.
I like it, very practical, and water tight. These aren't cheap, though, so it fails my criteria for personal use!
