    I suspect, since you asked if this underphotographed wood specimen will become good farwood, that you plan on running it thru a stove? Or selling it, at least...?

    Sorry, I just happened to have just enough of a liter of Dad's Root Beer in the fridge, and we had leftover vanilla ice cream cups at work in the freezer from a summer fun day. 2 ice cream cups is nearly the right amount. 3 would've been better.

    My wife told me that we had to clean out the fridge before we go on vacation.

    Ok then. You don't have to ask me twice. :)

    That looks like Red Maple to me. Looks like it may have absorbed some water from somewhere. Dead standing or down? Red Maple is one of the predominate trees around here. Welcome to the greatest firewood forum there is Ryan phillips.

    Examples of two different tillia americana from around here (aka American Basswood or Linden if you prefer). I have seen younger examples look slightly maplesque though. Usually the bark is smoother than maple when young.

    Edit: forgot to say around here I'd call that red maple in Ryan's pics.

    I could believe basswood but the bark is a little off. Let's hope it's maple for BTUs.

    Yeah, lets hope that it is maple, as any maple is more BTU's than basswood. Although, I like basswood as a shoulder season wood. I'll be burning a bit this year yet, and I have to process a couple decent ones that blew over as well.

    In my opinion, where he is in Tennessee, I think it is tulip poplar. We have a ton of it down here in the south. Bark kinda looks like sweet gum, which young poplar will, but it split straight grain and has a greenish color in places. It will dry fast, decent shoulder season wood.
    BTW, Ryan phillips , welcome to the club. We share and learn on here. Great bunch of folks. I'm just below you in the state of GA.
