This looks more like black locust to me than black walnut. Hard to say though. The ad says it's black walnut. Screenshot_2018-11-05-22-12-13~2.png

Looks more red to me Tom but I doubt you’re gonna have much issue with it when you see it up close. It’ll keep your buns warm when its dry!:fire:

That bright yellow ring is a sign of black walnut. I have also found that black locust, around here at least) doesn't grow so perfectly round - as it gets bigger it tends to be lobed.

Looks like walnut to me. Not the best but the price is the best.

I agree that it's Black Walnut.

I'm very familiar with Black Locust, it's most of my stash every season, and that doesn't look like it to me.

The only thing I don't like about BW is the bark is usually very messy. It crumbles apart and gets all over the place when I bring it inside. But I'm being petty....it burns nice.

Yes, the bark is messy on walnut. I wait until the bark falls off or it can be easily peeled off. There's like a layer of dirt that was once the stringy black inner bark.

Now that second pic I posted looks more promising, except it's location. I won't be going into the gunfire triangle of Milwaukee, not for walnut at least.

Hmm, don't know what happened but I had posted a second picture, front a different freebie in a worse area. But the wood looks better than walnut, and more of what I'm looking for.

Thank you. I don't know where my flack Jacket is, anyway... I can get ash all day 5 minutes south of my house in a very nice area that is still north of Milwaukee county.

Looks good. Get it. Plus it’s free.:DHeck, if it’s all cut and stacked like that by a paved road and free I’d take it even if it were pine.

I’d take ash all day over walnut, same as you Horkn - We’ve earned the right to be wood snobs-not going to a war zone for walnut- For locust ? Eh, could happen...

Yes it burns nice, love the blue flame, but what I cant stand is the cement like ash it produces,,,its just nasty, and handling it is nasty-has to be my least fave hardwood...Nice that the most of your stash is locust-I think I could melt the Fireview with it if I fed it enough-It’s the cold weather bomb for sure!

It literally is the highest area of shots fired in Milwaukee where I tend to find the free honey locust that gets cut down and posted. There's black locust in spots, a lot near the lake shore. It sucks that my buddy couldn't save the ten + cords of BL on a lakeshore home remodeling job he's doing. Yes, they literally burned it all in a brush pile. He tried to save it, even just a couple cords, but the homeowner had his landscape crew burn it all up. It would've been a bit of work, as it was on the steep lake Michigan lakeshore, but nothing my Kawasaki bayou and a trailer couldn't deal with.
