Just curious as to what you hoarders use for your bar and chain oil. I only have used stihl bar and chain oil for my saws. Is it ok to use other brands or should I stay with what I always have used for my stihl saws..thanks for your thoughts
I buy mine at Menards when it goes on sale. I think it was $5.99/gallon. I like it too.... I bought 3 gal last time, so I'm set for a while...
I use Stihl in the grey jug. It doesn't stink like heavy weight dino oils that the cheaper b/c oil does. Feels cleaner, I can see through it. It's worth the $14/gallon. I do use cheap stuff in my old 80s saws.
Not for my modern saws. The grey jug is gtg year round. I also keep it in the truck. Between that and a warm saw it's fine. I do use winter bkend in my 298xp and 281xp. It is hard to find the early 80s style worm gears for for t those two saws. Especially the brass worm gears
Bar oil from Tractor Supply. $7 a gallon on sale, sometimes $6 if you're lucky. I stocked up a year or so ago, bought 6 gallons and am still using it. Noticed that they also carry a winter weight oil but I have not tried it.
I'll use anything that has a name brand on it. Past few years it's been Husqvarna brand during summer, (been buying at the Bunyan show for $8/gallon) and Jonsered branded winter weight from TSC for the winter. I think I grabbed 4 gallons when it was on sale a few years ago and still have 1-1/4 gallon left. IMO, the winter weight does make a difference. There is noticeable difference in viscosity/thickness. The Jonsered stuff pours easy and lubes good below freezing.
I use Stihl oil with the proper season. Why save $10 in an MS880 and wreck parts far more costly than the oil. My dad ran used motor oil in his old mcculloch for years and it never skipped a beat.......
I use Husquvarna that I pick up for $7-8 a gallon at the NYS Woodsmen's show-pick up a case of winter and a case of summer weight every summer.
I get the FVP stuff from Menards on sale for $5 per gallon. Really tacky. In winter I cut it with a cup or 2 of mineral spirits or diesel fuel.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ This answer except I cut mine with Auto trans fluid because I always have that around. I go through 10-12 gallons a year & haven't had any problems with bars & chains or oilers.
