    I came across this fellow (and a few others like him) while I was cutting up some oak today. Can anyone tell me what this is and if it’s worth harvesting?

    Lmao! I wish. I had to finish getting the oak today, and I’m gonna have to rent a splitter for this. After the second swing my ax told me to kiss it’s azz!

    Hickory isn't easy to split by hand, but it makes nice firewood and pretty hardwood floors.

    Yeah, you thought it was oak, but it's better than oak.

    Yes, it's tougher than oak to split, but it's that much better.

    Good for you! Hickory is my #1 favorite firewood! I got one very large Shagbark Hickory some years back...I was sad when the last piece went in the stove! :(

    That's true...whenever I cut Hickory it makes me think of the classic sawdust smell...or what I think of as the classic sawdust smell anyways. When I was a kid dad bedded the cows with sawdust from a local Amish sawmill (made many trips there with him) and I guess they must have cut lots of Hickory!
