The wind storm in Sept. uprooted large beeches, basswood, maple, etc on neighbor's. Have got most down, cut and hauled, but there is one big maple that's a problem taking down. Its probably 20" or so on the butt and halfway up is a crotch: one side went on one side of another standing maple and the other side on the other and there it sets. The crotch where it's hung up in the other tree is probably about 12-14' off the ground. Both sides are probably about 16-18" diam. The top is hung up on yet another tree. The root ball is still attached. Have had a couple fairly experienced guys look at it and both say its a dangerous tree to try to drop without using a large cherry picker. Any suggestions you might have on how to take it down safely without hiring someone? Thanks
Hey now, he’s the real deal FNG that hasn’t spent the past year lurking.... but you’re right... Welcome to FHC dan peterson.... we like pics.
I had another smart guy reply about listening to the pros typed out but diceded to go for some pics. And welcome Dan!
I'm a old school guy that doesn't even have a cell phone much less one with a camera. I know that's hard to believe but true. I'll see if I might find someone with one that will go down with me a take a couple pictures. I can understand that a pic would be helpful. Thanks Guys.
Welcome to the club dan peterson! If you can manage to get a pic up I'm sure someone here will be able to help you out. There's a lot of experience on this site.
Without pics....( that was mentioned I think ), I suggest hooking a winch or come along in the general direction you need, but well away from the tree. I have cut some scary trees and I will stand there for a half hour and plot angles in my head of where to stand, where I want it to go, where it could go, where the limbs overhead could go, if the limbs could break loose etc. draw the forces and try to find center in gravity as best you can. Heavy come alongs help, but not if the limbs drop on you. Safety first always. Tree isn’t worth your life or an arm.
Not to sound like a smarty pants, but some of these fine folks get by with just a hand drawn picture.... and by that I mean drawn with crayons
Welcome aboard dan peterson Aside from smart alek comments (I'm guilty as heck), there is actually a LOT of good advice to be had here. Pics always help with questionable drops, hard to advise otherwise.
Hey dan peterson, is your maple anything like this giant dead red maple? Barcroftb making the felling cut with Shawn Curry watchin’ his azz..... 8/2016.
dan peterson If you have a digital camera you can take pics and load them on your computer and upload them from there. I don't take pics with a phone either.
I was going to ask for a petroglyph drawn on the cave wall with a piece of charcoal left over from a fire. But we'll take crayons as an acceptable answer. Welcome to FHC dan peterson ! FHC, where smartasses help each other out, even if we get a few laughs in first.
Without seeing pictures I would say if it's in the woods where you can let mother nature take care of it, then go that route. If this is in a yard where leaving it isn't an option, you should get pro help. Especially if there are buildings or other targets that could be damaged.
