Neighbor asked me if I could split some rounds for today. Said I could cut down a could of dead trees in return. I'd od split it for her regardless as she is 82 years old and lives alone. The rounds have been in her open front wood shed for 4 years. The get good wind but limited sun light. I took 1 piece of red oak that was about 22 inches long and split it up, then took a reading with the moisture meter. A very impressive 13.1%. For reference I checked a piece of the hickory I brought home yesterday. Get your rain coat ready 47.6%. The hickory is from a blow down back in April.

Good on you GrJfer for helping out. :handshake:

Amazing that you say that split came out of a 4 year round.... wow! That’d be half punk here.

Some pieces were a bit punky. This piece came from one upper layer of rounds they were all stacked and out of the weather /rain.

Rounds do dry out eventually if they don't rot. Course it helps if they were dead standing when they were cut up too. ;)

    I have 4 cords of rock oak...standing dead....cut css between end of august to end of september 2017....last week...split a couple n checked...about a 21% average.
Same with about 6 cords of red oak....averaged 23%.
Should be real good for 20-21 season.
