I've only used my current stove, which came with the house, but the picture below shows how the stove pipe was connected (straight section --> elbow --> thimble collar, no adapter). I have no idea whether that's the right way to do it, but it's the only way I know. :emb:

It is a little difficult to tell from the picture but it appears that collar goes right into a clay liner correct? If so I believe it should have a short thimble inside of it with a male or crimped end sticking out to put a pipe on. I’m not sure if a 22 gauge would slide in there or not. Does it have some give to it? If so it might give you a nice tight fit.
I’m not a mason, and I hope a pro like Well Seasoned chimes in here, but I believe the collar and or thimble should be mortared into place. That way it’s solid when you attach your pipe with screws. Otherwise it could just fall right out. You also need to be careful that it doesn’t protrude into the flu very far or it will interrupt your draft. Is it a 7” square ID flu?

Yes, it's some kind of clay liner. I think it's round rather than square.

I posted a picture on the previous page that shows the inside of that thimble/collar. It seems like it's one sold piece, which goes 4-5 inches deep and is mortared into place. It doesn't go all the way into the flue, so it's not going to interfere with the draft. There isn't any male end, and it's wide enough to fit an un-flared female end of a 6" elbow snugly. That's why I think I need a male to male adapter between it and a flared female elbow. Anyway, I ended up ordering a 22 gauge elbow and double male adapter from Woodstock, so I'll see whether it ends up fitting better with just the elbow or the adapter.

I think your on the right track with all the advice here and working with Woodstock. Is your clay liner 8" round all the way up or just the thimble?

Also, do you have a clean out door in the basement?

Are there any combustible walls behind any of that brick, or is it brick all the way through to the outside?

Also, you can crimp the other end to fit it into the thimble.

Yes, cleanout door in the basement.

No combustible walls between the brick and chimney behind it, AFAIK. The masonry chimney is situated between that room with the stove and our mudroom. The mudroom's wall juts out around the footprint of the chimney, so I think the brick in the stove room abuts the chimney, and there's no combustible material behind it until the drywall in the mudroom on the far side of the chimney. There is a combustible wall above the brick and to the sides, but those surfaces are far enough to meet all clearances for the stove.
