image.jpeg image.jpeg image.jpeg image.jpeg image.jpeg image.jpeg image.jpeg Oh Boy,another great day at the grand daughters place! She and I cleaned up,stacked and burned brush piles at her place. Here are some before during and after pictures. The stack of wood is the one she picked up,hauled, with what i call her "wood wagon'', and stacked along her fence. Her fist stack of wood from her own trees,it's all ash. We had a good time, she's a worker for sure!! I think we got a total of 6 piles totally burned up today. And all that within 3 hrs. I have to give her credit, she stuck right with it, and i never even asked her to help. I'm thinking there just might be hope for this old United States after all. :D

Well-done! All these years into heating with wood and one thing has remained the same for me......there's nothing more gratifying than processing your own wood with hard work into heat for the winter.

I love it when it's down near zero and the house is cozy from all that hard work cutting, processing , and stacking that wood. It's one of the main bennies of the whole process that I love the most!

I'm like you, when it's cold out, rainy, and i can sit back and think about what it takes to get the wood out of the woods, down to my house, get it ready to burn, it's really satisfying for me to know i'm still healthy enough to do, it and i still enjoy it. I've cut wood in the winter up one of the hills and it was raining at first, then it snowed, it got pretty miserable but, i kept after it. Right up to the end, the road was starting to wash out, and i knew that that particular time, it was going to be my last load. This was a couple of yrs ago. Makes you feel like you have really accomplished some thing, for another year. Today was special, our grand daughters first house, she's buying it, and it needed a lot of tree's thinned. Now, its to the point where i can actually see that i'm accomplishing some thing. Told my wife, ''today was a pay day'' we got to burn all the brush piles, all but 2 of them, now it really is starting to make a difference and change the look of the property. And, it was for our grand daughter, she's a great kid, and i really enjoy helping her out. I've got the tools, and the time, i'm retired, and she's got the energy to help me, it made for a great day.

The best thing about this is you teaching the next generation and her willingness to learn! Some of my fondest memories are spending the day with my late Uncle keeping his wooded lot cleaned up, burning brush piles and deadfall. He didn't heat with wood at the time but loved being in the bush.
He taught me a lot of what I know now about tree species and how to sharped an axe, even though I don't use an axe anymore.
But the burning of the brushpiles, that was addictive. I still like the smell of woodsmoke on my clothing or my wifes. Smells like honest work.

That's really cool B.Brown Great kid, but give you & her Grandma some credit too. Work ethic is taught, not inherited. She learned that somewhere. Well done!

I'd say you two had a very productive day. Nothing like spending the day working up some wood and teaching the next generation what it's all about. Great job to both of you.

I just told her the other day, being a home owner is a lot of responsibility, keeping the gutters cleaned out, no matter what, make sure your pipes are wrapped, just in case it gets cold quick, don't put things off, take care of them as soon as possible( i have trouble with this one myself, lol) And, a bunch of other things that will make her life a whole lot easier, and make her feel good about herself. She's a good gal, she and i really get along good. I showed her how to light the fire the right way, watch the burn, and keep it under control with just a little misting of the hose, work the embers to the middle as the fire burns down to help all of the junk to burn up. Keep an eye on the fire, don't let it even start to get out of control, or it could cost big $$$$. I even let her run the big saw, lol. The stihl 193T, fun to watch her try to start it, ha,ha. I showed her how i do it, then i let her cut some of the smaller limbs, talked her through it and she did great. She's willing to try almost anything , she's pretty independent, wonder where she got that from, ha,ha. My wife no doubt, her grandma.

Good on you and your granddaughter B.Brown. From the viewpoint of someone who’s fighting their way back at 60, I find you both inspiring. She’s a brave and ambitious young lady who’s obviously been raised well.

Though I love this story, it's sad to see what has happened to our beautiful Ash trees. Those last images of the punky stump break my heart but at least these trees didn't die in vain.
