So yesterday I moved and ....."hand split" o_O (for those who thought I was going to be lazy).... half that massive pile of oak on my front lawn, it's now in the back near the splitter. It took it' toll on my back :pain: let me tell you!
A hot shower, a muscle relaxer and 5 Motrin later, dinner and bed at 9pm. So, I'm up and going to do the other half today .

For that reason, I'd just noodle it as well.
    Great score!

Some of those "BIG" rounds I put a relief cut in about 2" and put in my big metal felling wedges in, smacked them a couple times and they split. My 12# sledge don't play ;) Kicks my @$$ after a while though... o_O

Plus I find the noodles very useful for shoulder season when I need to start evening fires.

Wow Dave, that is a lot all at once! That would be a summer's worth of work for me. I hope you aren't so sore in the morning. Think you'll live in NJ long enough to burn it all?

Not to my knowledge. I think it was some kids tree house 75 years ago, I found a couple of nails as I busted these up, They wern't galvanized just old framing nails. I counted the rings as "best" I could find on the big stuff and it was at least 146 years old, Poor tree seen some history.

Whoo, that was a whole pile of work Dave. My back is sore just looking it over. Red oak isn't really a featherweight sort of wood! Nice job.

Thanks my friend but I am "Very very close" to buying a vertical splitter! But I gotta keep a handle on my spending. I have a $8000.00 well to put in up in NH in the spring so I'm kinda hesitant.. Were also in the middle of re-doing our Kitchen so I'm not done with "her" spending yet...

Welcome to the club Nick&Lissa!!! Very nice to have you here. :handshake::yes::) When you get a chance go to our "Introduce yourself" area on the forums and say hello. Now to answer your question, "noodling is when you cut the wood "long ways" down the grain of the wood. The chips come out of the saw and they look like noodles! Watch the video.:D It's when you have a really big piece or something like Elm or Gum wood that doesn't split very easy!!!
