What would you guys recommend for good all year round tires that are good in the winter also. It's for Ram 1500 , 17" I'm currently looking at the wrangler duratrac
I have liked the Michelins that are on my Tundra. I can't remember the name, they are the more aggressive all season tire. I was prepared to put a more aggressive tire on the truck, I did on my 2004 Tundra, but was impressed with the Michelins during our March 2017 blizzard. I only have 18,000 miles on the truck, they appear to wearing well-time will tell about that.
Duratracs are great I have them on my Jeep right now, I’ve also had really good luck with firestone destinations ATs. I am now on my third set of them on my 2014 ram (I put on a ton of miles, company vehicle). They wear very well and handle great in most condition. I’m sure there are better tires out there but when I find something that works I stick with it, I like consistent predictability out of tires and that’s what I get out of the destination and duratracs. It can also be a very costly mistake picking the wrong tires when it usually $500-1200 for a set. I made the mistake years back of straying from firestone and Goodyear and getting a set of Yokohama tires on a Jeep I had, I don’t remember which AT tire they were specifically but it was the worst 50,000 miles of my life. They were super hard and were awful in snow and even worse on ice. It ruined the brand for me. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Falken wildpeak AT are great tires that don't cost a lot. We've got them on the 4runner and they really are great. They are even quiet on the freeway.
I was super impressed with the Bridgestone Dueller H/L Alenza's that came on my F-150, I do quite a bit of driving in northern NH in the snow and they impressed me. Great on dry road as well.
We have a 1 ton dually at work that I put the Duratracs on last summer. Last winter we were able to plow most snow in 2 wheel drive.
Cooper Discoverer AT3 XLT's I have them on both Dodges and they are great. Well actually AT3 on the 2nd gen and AT3 XLT on the 4th gen it is the newer version. Quiet, great traction, and smooth ride.
I have a set on my pickup that I am utterly sick of but can't afford to just junk them. Took a chance on a brand I never had heard of but seemed to have a decent tread pattern, wrong! Rubber is hard so it don't bite but is lasting forever! Mama bear has Wild Country XTX on her avalanche and we love them. They are made by Cooper and the XTX has the snow and ice certification stamp on the side (it is a picture of a mountain with a snowflake inside the mountain outline). They grab snow, bite on ice, dig through mud, and will be on my pickup for my next set!
These tires with shown stamp have performed to a minimum better than m+s rated tires according to tire testing wizzards in the industry.
Agree with Michelin LTX but they are $$ Good timing on this thread. I need to get tires in the next couple weeks for my 3500 DRW. 6 Tires = $$$$. I stay mostly on road and pull a heavy fifth wheel so maybe staying with a ht type. Cooper has a sale right now so probably going that way unless I hear reason to shy away from them. Cooper makes another brand of tire that I got at Blain's farm and fleet. Can't remember name and that truck isn't here right now to look - worked well plowing and were not too loud , ride was decent E rated tire, 50k mile. set of 4 was $800 including mounting and balance.
I am currently on the last 3rd of tread on a set of Duratracs. I feel like they were money well spent. They do good in winter conditions, will dig in mud and are very quiet when new. Mine started getting noisy at about half tread wear. One tire took considerable weight to balance, I remember (could be the wheel). They are currently pretty noisy and the fronts are cupping a bit. My search continues to replace the holy grail of tires for me...the BFGoodrich Mud Terrain KM. Not the new & improved models...the KMs. I managed to wear through 3 sets of them while they were available. Best. Mud. Tire. Ever. (for a weekend warrior that still has to DD his truck, that is). Wear like iron and will dig until your belly is laying on the ground. All that said, the aging, wiser part of me is saying to go with an "All Terrain" tire this time. I thought the Duratracs were a decent compromise between full blown mudder and all terrain, FWIW. Wanting to try something different this time around. I am currently looking hard at the Goodyear Ultra Terrain, Hankook Dynapro ATM and the Falken Wildpeak AT3s. A buddy has the Hankooks and speaks highly of them. I'm just dreading purchasing something less aggressive, then getting hung up on a wet lawn. I prefer to leave deep ruts in the lawn and not get stuck >>>Mudders. Decision time is coming quickly...one of the last items left I need to 're-fit' on the pickup. The 're-fit' cost me my motorcycle vacation to the mountains this year, so the truck had better be on it's best behavior after all the money and TLC I poured in these last few months.
Just went insane obsessing over which at tires to put on my 2016 Ram 1500. I looked at EVERYTHING on the net and talked to a bunch of people. Not sure why I got so crazy over it. Anyway it came down to the new Grabber atx or the Falken Wildpeak AT/W3. Those two were so close but I went with the Falkens because I liked the sidewalls a little better. I've had the Dynapros. I liked them okay but the newest generation is better and I think I only got 35k out of them.
I have run the Cooper AT3's on my own truck with no complaints. Ran them as winter tires for 3 winters then left them on and ran them all summer before going to a true winter tire two years ago. I am currently running a set of LT BF Goodrich All Terrain KO2's on my 3/4 ton work truck. New this year and so far I have been impressed. Relatively quiet on the highway. Not a winter tire but aggressive enough to perform very well in the 4-6" of snow I was working in last week in northwestern Ontario. .
I put Mastercraft M&S (load range E) on my 2500 Ram. Never again! They were so soft that the truck and camper would start swaying about 55mph and would almost get out of control. After several thousand miles it got better, but there won't be a 2nd chance.
I’ll for sure recommend the Goodyear Duratrac’s if you can afford them. They do excellent here in the Pa winters (‘03 Tundra). I can run through deep rain/water with excellent control. I’ve been running them for about 10 years now, and I’ll keep buying them (been through more than one set). A few years ago I recommended them to my brother-in-law and he loves them too. He recently got his dad, my FIL, to order a set for his F150, in 31”. For straight up off-road, we run Mickey Thompson Baja MTZ’s on the Jeep. Excellent off-road, not the best every day driver tire. One I would recommend staying clear of is the General Grabber. A Jeep friend had them for a while and those tires wouldn't get him over the simplest obstacle or climb the easiest slope. He hated them! Another friend ran the Goodyear MT/R's. Again, that's more off-road than on.
