Why me, I always have the weird stuff happen! I was in the middle of a full throttle cut yesterday when all of a sudden my saw got really loud. I killed the engine and looked at it only to find that it had blown its muffler cover . The top sheet metal screw had apparently come loose to the point that it must have vibrated out. At that moment the exhaust force must be great enough that it blew the outer ported cover off shearing the metal at the two bottom machine screws! I would have thought that it would just blow the cover open slightly to vent at the gap but no way! It blew it right off. I checked for a replacement and think I'm just going to go with a nice dual ported aftermarket job. It uses 2 machine screws on the top corners too instead of the one sheet metal screw type. What's that I see out of focus in that top photo ............... Yes !!! A robin and flowers!!! Spring is here for sure in NE Ohio!!!
The shearing probably was not as "instant" as you think. I bet the alternating pressures you normally find inside the muffler yanked it back and forth quite a few times before it let go.
The 038, 034, and 024 (026) also had a similar muffler. If you look at the inside of the cover, it's got a single hole...,those holes are basically baffles on the outside. Those are not all muffler holes..
Oh ok. Some member drilled all kinds of holes in his cover. I was thinking it was him but it was obviously someone else. And I have seen the 026 with those holes bit thought it was one drilled through. I even zoomed in on the pic and thought they went through until I relooked at it after your post.
The holes are just in the heat shield on the very front of the muffler. The actual muffler cover is underneath. It was indeed Boog that drilled a ton of holes in the muffler. But that's his MS460, not the 038. Try to keep up.
Ah yes, my infamous 20-port (counting the OEM slit too) 460 winter cover! Runs and sounds like a mean grizzly with it too! I'm back to my boring, but effective, home made summer dual port muffler now. One of these days I'll break down and get another of these aftermarket ones like I put on my 440 (maybe).
The part of the cover with all the holes is like a heat shield, that's all. The dual slits point to the side. However, you know me well clemsonfor, I did drill through 3 of them that lined up with the spark screened chamber so they were venting directly to the front. That baby was actually penta-ported! .
I just might be bringing a couple looking for new homes ........................... need to make room for something new/old Still thinking now ........ maybe 191T, 024AV, 036 "Pro", 038 Mag, mmmmaaaayyyybbbbeeeeeee 460 Mag. I have plans. I'll post them up here soon if I do, "free delivery" to the GTG.
