I just acquired a Makita DSC6000i I'm wondering if anybody knows much about these saws. Is it the same as a Dolmar PS 6000i? Any help you can give me regarding this saw will be great. I don't even know what is wrong with it yet. Any tendencies? Where is the best source for parts?

The Makita 6000i is identical to the Dolmar 6000i except the Makita is blue and the Dolmar is a redish orange.
    Just use Dolmar repair items.
    Cylinders are scarce
The 6800 is the same chainsaw except for a larger bore.
The Dolmar 116S has the same cylinder and piston but it has to be the "S" version. Dolmar 120S has the larger bore of the 6800.

Looks like I need a piston . It is not scored but it is torn up. Not sure what happened? There is a hole along the edge of the piston and the piston ring went bombshell in the cylinder. Cylinder doesn't appear damaged. Any ideas? The hole appears mechanical not burned trough.

See if you can post a couple pictures of it. You have my curiosity peaked, the Makitas of that size and era aren't all that common either.

Typically some small part of the engine goes up through there?

    Needle bearing
    Main bearing cage
    Circlip from wrist pin
Pin that keeps ring from turning
    Ground electrode from spark plug

You can get a Meteor piston much cheaper

Carbine has used the Dolmar 6000iH in the pictures below. The Makita is Blue/black

Here are pictures of the corresponding Dolmar 6000iH for reference.

So that makes sense! Based on its location. I don't see any damage to the cylinder. Just ordered a new piston. Any other ideas on what I should be looking for?

This series of chainsaw is pretty straight forward. I've had the one in the pictures all apart and it went back together with no big problems. It didn't have much time on it as a 6000i and I made a 6800i out of it.
This is a video of my 6800iH with a guy from Cincinnati running it at a GTG last fall . . .

    Get Together.
A bunch of chainsaw guys get together and use each others chainsaws to cut thin pieces off logs called cookies. It is a good way to see what other chainsaws are like and for old friends to meet up and shoot the breeze. Sort of a chainsaw party. It sometimes gets into chainsaw comparisons or races etc.

One of the guys is the host and the others pitch in to help defray the costs.

    A piston/rings and a cylinder from a 6800 or 120S.

    Cylinders are hard to find.

I had been wanting to make my Dolmar 6000iH into a 6800 ever since I bought it in used the spring of 2011. Cylinder/pistons were available from the distributors then. I kept putting it off until this time last year and there was not a cylinder available any where. Not even on Ebay.

I just so happened to stumble upon two new 49mm bore cylinders that a guy in Oregon was trying to sell on Ebay. They were not listed as Makita or Dolmar but just as 49mm. He had bought out a out-of-business chainsaw shop some years before and was just selling off the junk. I could see from the detailed pictures that they were for a 6800. So I bought one for $50. I then bought a Meteor 49mm piston for $30 and away I went. -Dolmar 6800-. It has run perfect before and after.

The Dolmar 116Si/120Si and the the Makita & Dolmar 6000i/6800i are just sweetheart chainsaws that everyone loves who has one. They quit making them along about 2001.

Patience is a virtue and a good cylinder will turn up before you know it?
