Of course it's time to clean, inspect, repair, etc. after a long hard burning season. Does anyone put a drying agent in the stove or fireplace? Like "Moisture Rid" or "Cat Litter". I had some surface rust on my stove last year and some rust on the damper in my fireplace. Just wondering if some sort of moisture absorbent material should be placed in the stove and FP?

Dry hay came to mind. Bought an old snowsled years back that should have been a rust bucket, especially the skis… but there was no rust anywhere on the skis. The sled had been stored for years in an old hay barn with hay all around it. Guy at a sled dealership said they've seen that before too.

I'm like BBar, I usually leave a bed of ash in the stove as it seems to act like a moisture absorber.

However, this year I plan on cleaning the inside with a scotch pad or something, and wiping the whole thing down inside with canola oil or light machine oil to keep the rust at bay. At least that is what I was thinking of doing. Anyone else have any ideas?

I'm also going to fabricate some 3/8" id stainless steel venturi lines to inject heated air up the flue when I open the doors on the NZ3000.....it likes to spill some smoke into the room upon opening, even when you are slow and careful. It'll be wired on its own on/off swith. that will activate when the right door is opened.

You are using compressed air? Are you going to the center of the flue? Interesting idea.

My stove has a pretty healthy coating of creosote inside. I don't go crazy cleaning it, mostly because I'm not above building a fire at anytime in the summer.

Jeff, I'm going to use a squirrel cage blower to and fabricate a tapered "funnel" that will channel into the two venturi tubes. They won't be centered in the flue, they'll be against the walls and bent inward where they end (opposite each other) where they will force a vacuum up the flue. I did this with an indoor smoker we built several years ago at work and it works flawlessly.

yeah, WS IS! Had two bad years with the Jotul. Tried solving the problems here, the other forum and with my stove shop, nothing worked.
    I'm really disappointed with it.

I see. Doesn't seem like there would be much air thru those small tubes, at low pressure, but I guess it wouldn't take much.

We'll find out soon if it works....The pipe on the smoker was a lot smaller dieter so the volume may make the blower inept. I am have to hook up a line from the compressor and a magnet valve if the fan doesn't work.

I put containers of damp rid in after a really good cleaning. Cheap rust protection.

And a light coating of Pam cooking spray. Most pellet burners do this, but very few wood burners.

I do it in all stoves. Rust will eventually eat everything. Better to protect your investment.

Some have great luck with ash. I did not fair so well. So I use an absorbent and an oil and plug the OAK & Flue/Exhaust (air infiltration is not good. I like my A/C inside my home)

I'll be contacting you for sure Scotty . I don't want to get any bad karma by doing anything before the stove is actually here.

Dex, the Pam cooking spray sounds pretty easy, plus the damp rid. May try blocking the flue also. Thanks for the suggestions guys.

At the very least, you should enjoy the bigger firebox.
