In an ATV? Bikes usually load the clutches harder than ATV's...and the bike guys are saying their clutches are just failing a little prematurely using it...so its not an immediate catastrophic failure like some synthetics would cause.

Honda Rubicon. Not a HP monster by ANY stretch of the imagination but I do tow a lot with it and work the clutch hard. Probably wouldn't notice any slipping anyway since it has a hydro transmission versus gear on gear like a bike.

Ahh...yes, the ole Rubicon. Kind of a horse of a different color transmission-wise. I have been out of the shop since 2006 so I can't remember anymore, but doesn't Honda call for HP-4 oil in those?

Another hot, humid, mosquito filled day. Fall weather is about to show up quick. We're going to end up going from running the AC to running the heat in under 48 hours. Crazy.

HP4. I couldn't handle the price tag for 5 quarts so I did a LOT of reading and switched to T6. So far, so good.

The transmission really is a gem in these things....as long and you don't mind a mild slush box feel. No more slushy than a belt drive though.

What a crappy day out today. I didn't get much of anything done today except eating.

    Some days, that's enough.
At the moment, there's an Apple pie bread in the oven.

I added a lot of resting on the couch to the eating.

That's what you need to pay attention to with any wet clutch bike or quad. Really it's the "energy conserving" additives that kill wet clutches. Also pay attention to the weight. 10w-40 can't have the "energy conserving" starburst on back of the bottle. So always double check, but you can pretty much always run 10w 40.

T6 and iirc t5 rotella are fine. Regular rotella used to be better with enough zddp for flat tappet cams. Not anymore.

Now some full synthetic are fine for wet clutches, like Mobil 1.

I just use plain old Dino oil in my ATV. I probably don't put a dozen hours on mine a year and just do annual changes. Most of those hours are idling and low speed as I use it to spray herbicide with it and a little hunting and a dozen or more play miles some of that wide @$$ open .

No kidding! If I wanted to deal with hot/humid Florida weather 8 months out of the year then I'd move there!

The christmas trees are brought in every year from different tree farms in the area so you can see different species. Kind of a public service announcement/marketing thing.

The boards were sawn planks of local species with live edges to see the bark. Finished with epoxy coatings so the grain was clear.

Unfortunately you really need to be wary and not just buy what you've bought before, unless it's bike specific oil.

Oil manufacturers keep switching out their formulas, so that "energy conserving" sign needs to be watched like a hawk.

Enough bark and it's usually a dead give away. I. This area though some species might be hard without the leaves...but I'm not a wood grain or wood technology expert.

I am not sure I could Identify norther red and southern red oak without the leaves if all I had was a little edge board. Swamp white and white oak may be a trick too?

I left that bit out. I've got a nice dent in the couch from my lounging self. :dennis:

I need to take out the recycling and the garbage though tonight, as well as put the aluminum cans in my car to take to the recycling center tomorrow.

Here is the slat re-sawn to see the actual carpenter bee tunnels. I'm sureposed how close to the edges of the board it got without going out the side.

I'm sure there's some cool woodworking to be had there...but I'm not creative enough to see it.
