Hearth build

Remodel most of my house and open up the old flue it was incased with a closet and partial wall mortar river rock from my area on I'm no Mason but really happy way it came out

Finally determined exactly where this pad is going to sit, and got started with some stone work today. The product is called Airstone, very easy to work with, wet saw made short work of the few cuts I had to make. I trimmed down the slate tiles after dry fitting, but lacking a 1/2" square notch trowel, will hold off on setting them until tomorrow. Plan is to go up the wall with Airstone after the stove and thimble are in place.

 

That's gonna look mighty fine!

Moving right along.. Grout tomorrow, then I'll try and get the stove on there Tuesday without pulling a muscle. I think I might hit the edges of the slate with an angle grinder to smooth it out a bit..

Yeah that's turning out great!
How much are the tiles overhanging the hearth? Judging from the pictures...I'd worry a little about something hitting that unsupported edge breaking it off. (my 1 cent)

 

Between 1/4 and 3/4" ( depending on contour of stonebelow) - I'm concerned about the same thing, and plan to take them down a bit with an angle grinder. Tried napping at the edges a bit on the wet saw and didn't like the results.

 

Really like the hearth looking good

 

I like the Frank Lloyd Wright-ish look of the overhanging slate but I'd be banging up my shins and who knows what else on 'em.

 

Grout is in, spacers are out. Two days until ignition! Parts are scattered all over, keeping the stove stripped to save a few pounds. Mrs Papi is mostly excited to get her dining room back.

 

Getting down to business.

Big shout out to Czar Energy from Westfield MA. Two of their finest lads did a very thorough, professional job getting the chimney built and going through the wall. next update will be getting the rear wall covered in Airstone.
