Not too bad, Thirty something feet from the deck if you fall straight down, another 10-12 feet if you take a ride and hit the ground below. The roof is a 12/12 and I plan to bolt single section aluminum ladder to the roof and build a small perch behind the chimney some day. Then I'll be able to get up there with an 8' step ladder.
My cousin in Maine has a very tall masonry chimney, she had this brush on a chain thing with a pulley at the top of the chimney and one at the bottom. Her chimney could be cleaned by craning a handle in the basement. My explanation is probably horrible. Think bicycle chain and sprockets vertically inside the chimney with a brush fixed to the chain to go up and down when a pedal On the outside of the chimney in the basement is turned. I remember her saying that it was expensive. I’ll have to get some pic next time I’m up there
I used to do some business with a guy back in the 80’s up in Grand Isle that made those. They’re pretty popular up that way and they do work very well.
This afternoon: That was it, what was sitting on top of the cleanout. ----------------------------------------------------------- Looking up: I didn't waste my time climbing up on the roof, there was nothing to brush out. One quick brush at the in and up junction. ======================= Looking in the junction before it got a quick brush: ============================ The short horizontal pipe that usually has quite a bit of ash and some rather large flakes in it: I probably could have skipped cleaning it out this year, but I like to check. That's a whole year. Curiosity killed the bee ?
All this talk about cleaning made me go up an clean mine too. Masonry chimney with 8x8 clay liner. I clean from the top. Got about a gallon of black stuff. Then cleaned the stove inside too. Bought this Neuman cleaner around 30 yrs ago. In a few years I'd like to pull down the masonry and put up a stainless one so I can clean from the bottom clean out with a drill and extension poles
I have the same one. My FIL gave it to me a few years ago since he went to an OWB when they built their new place. I was always surprised with how well it actually works. The only issue I had was it didn't get in to the corners of my 8 x 8 square flue. Guess I can pass it on now that I have a SS liner and brush.
I am gonna try and clean mine through the clean out today 6x8 masonry. Just gotta see if I can actually get to it under the porch. I just discovered the clean out this summer, they built a farmers porch on the house, and it hides the door. It was then further hidden by a propane stove.
Well, I didn't clean mine today, did replace a few things on the stove, 1 brick was cracked, replaced the mineral baffle board and ceramic fiber blanket, door gasket and touched up the paint. Did take a picture of the pipe from inside the stove up to first bend, been burning 4 yrs and never cleaned the pipe, maybe we're doing something right.
