I asked our maintenance department about fabricating a cover for our new splitter, since the half drum I use on the older splitter didn't work as well on it. I think it turned out good. Now just to get our favorite college logo sticker on it...GO DAWGS...

Very nice cover and matching paint! Cover would also be a good place for a "Firewood Hoarders" vinyl decal! Also, it never occurred to me to store my splitter in the upright position. Thanks Jeff! Smart idea, it will save a small amount of room in the garage. Never could figure why they were made to tilt up like that anyway. Now I know....it's a storage feature!

I'm going to be storing my splitter outside for the foreseeable future.
For the ones who lock theirs up, what are you using? I will at least have a lock thru the coupler.
Solid rims so I can't run a chain thru the rims.

I can't see spending $300 on a lock for a $900 splitter. It is a nice lock though.
Locks only keep honest thieves honest.
With that said, I don't want to buy something that will be destroyed in a minute or less.
If they want to bring a battery powered angle grinder out, well more power to them..
For example the trimax wheel clamp, supposedly just wire the chock part up and drive off.
Locks thru the coupler can be undone in seconds with a boltcutter.
Some of the coupler locks such as the masterlock can be unlocked with a ziptie.
I just want to make them work for it and not be a visual deterrent if you will.
Which from what I have researched so far seems to be the case.

I lock up my trailers with this! Master Lock 30 ft. Heavy-Duty Vinyl Coated Galvanized Steel Braided Cable-70DCC - The Home Depot
Never had a problem! It's not "easy" to cut with bolt cutters and it doesn't cut well with a grinder, "but will". I also have the professional master lock that goes with it. You're not picking it. As you said, it's only a deterrent, make sure it's insured through your homeowners insurance.

With my solid rims, I'm not sure how I could use that cable.Which was what I wanted to do.
    Buy new rims?
I don't think most people know how to pick locks but master locks are notorious for easy lock picking.
for example that model lock #930
different body lock but same internals.
I'm not really concerned about the picking though, I think most criminals are going to brute force it.
Just as long as you can't stick a flat blade into it and pop it. Like this lock

    fast forward to 4:20

Yep! Well, my next thought here is rent a storage unit! Or just tie a pit bull to it and put a dog box next to that.:rofl:

haha yep I hear you. It's still a good lock though as far as bolt cutter resistant. And as I said, doubt the average criminal would pick it.
I just need to clean out the garage of hoarding since it doubles as the basement and I'd have room for it.

If your hitch coupler is bolted on the tounge of the splitter maybe just take it off?

that's actually a pretty good option. They might be able to use the safety chains to tie it up but it's still less for them to work with.

I removed the safety chains as well, didn't even think about that when I posted earlier. typing faster than thinking..
I doubt it will go anywhere really now.
I was looking at those boots, wasn't sure which one was good to use.
Yea those boots are a third of the cost of the splitter. Not so sure about that.

Seeing as they are already junk have you considered filling them with foam? I’ve had good success with that in the past although I would think your splitter would eventually deform the tires.
