Amongst other domestic projects I’ll be getting up on the roof and poking out the chimney today! I’m not a huge fan of climbing up the metal roof but it must be done. Waiting for the dew to burn off.

I need to do mine as well. Gott buy a ladder first. The one I have just barely reaches the gutters. Ok for cleaning, but not so much for mounting/dismounting

We might give ours a check but don't expect to find much that needs cleaned. Been having fires in it already this season and no problems.

Depending on your chimney design you might be able to clean bottom up with a Sooteater...

Get em cleaned could be a polar vortex anytime now.:coldfire:
I always try to get mine cleaned in the spring so it’s all ready in fall. Then just a quick inspection and lighter up.

I have seen these, I have the old brush and fiberglass poles and can still get up on the roof, someday that may be the method I’ll adopt.

We have a center masonary chimney with the clean out in the basement the soot eater will work great when I get an insulated liner and more efficient stove

We just installed a metal roof....not steep...4/12 pitch. As long as the roof is dry ill continue to clean top down...its nice having no mess in the house. Just suck it out with ash vacuum when done....

Just cleaned mine Friday. The cap had chunks on it but the pipe only had 3/4c of ashy stuff. Last fall I had a grapes ice cream pail so much better. First Fire ended up happening Friday night as we’ve had several nights in low 40’s with daytime highs staying in low 50’a with rain. I’d rather than pay the gas man anyway.
I’m behind on wood for this year so may either buy some or be more picky with only grabbing dead/dry stuff. Here’s to keeping the pipe clean another year

Any processed wood block burners following this thread?

If you burn those blocks exclusively, how often do you sweep your chimneys , and how much creosote do your find?

I got up there and poked it out. Surprisingly small amount of build up. Probably from burning dryier wood. I would have liked to take a pic from up there but I did not bring my phone with me and once down I’m not going back up till it needs to be done again.

Cleaned mine today. Might be my last time. 10 pitch roof is just getting to be too much. Used to dance on those things in my youth :)
Been two seasons since I cleaned it. Got about 1/2 gallon of stuff out. More than most but I’m still not using covered wood. Non insulated flex pipe in a 18”x18” flue. Paid fifty bucks for it on CL. Some day I should upgrade.
I’ll see Wednesday if I get the big score on EPDM rubber ;)

Did both of mine last weekend. Fireplace shelf was pretty full. Stove side had about 2 cups of fine powder

Must be contagious I did mine yesterday. Probably going to open the house up tonight and do a short fire for the first stinker burn. :fart:

No i just connect the poles as i push up and out the chimney. Got the poles at lowes, they are very flexible. And i have the shopvac running in the hole as i do it so no dust comes in.
