Was out today, came back to find this in the yard: Looks like the trunk of a red oak, clean 20-22" rounds that were split in half and about 2' across. And before anybody else says it, "That sucks." KaptJaq
That looks like more of that awful red oak that takes far too long to season. Not surprising they were looking to dump it somewhere.
3 of us were out cutting wood at the shooting range. We're putting in a new 1000m range, so there's tons of poplar for the future fire pit. One of the boys is a friend of mine, and hes one of the busiest people I've ever met. He did manage to take the time to get out there and help us out though. Everything that gets done at our club is done by volunteer labor. The range opened at 11am so we had to hightail it out of there. We managed to drag 1 1/2 trailer loads up to the top end where it could be split without the danger of being shot. LOL. My two working partners had to take off, so I proceeded to run my splitter non stop for the next 3 1/2 hours. It was a pretty good size pile of wood for sure. Back to the one fellow who works more hours per week than anyone I've ever known. When he's actually home, he likes to have a fire in his fire pit with the family. He's bummed some wood off me over the years, and I'm fine with it. He'd come out with me (and might still) to cut some for himself, but time isn't his friend. Over the years, he's helped me more than I've helped him I think. Anyway....when I had a decent size pile for the range, I split the last of it and left it on the trailer....maybe half a cord. I then drove over to his place and played wood fairy. I know he feels bad whenever he asks me for wood so I knew that if he had a decent stash of his own, he wouldn't have to worry about it anymore. We're pretty much done back yard fire pit season (it was snowing again today) here in the north, so by the time spring rolls around, it should be close to being dry enough to burn in the pit. I have to admit that the situation isn't all one sided. He can burn that cottonwood, and leave my good wood pile alone !!! LOL
I look a little better than that after a hard day on the saw.....well....fatter anyway....and with a beard.
