I was thinking this morning while splitting wood the parts of wood gathering I enjoy and that which I dont. Here's the order with what I like 1st down to what I dont like. 1 bucking/cutting (I do a lot) 2 splitting (this a lot too) 3 felling (not a lot) 4 loading and unloading (not my fav) 5 stacking I really enjoy cutting and splitting and felling is a a satisfying challenge with large trees. Loading and unloading is just hard labor and I dont like stacking at all but maybe its because of the condition of my back.
I can agree with your listing. I'm not fond of stacking because it bores me. I enjoy cutting, splitting, and some felling. I try to move and restack as minimally as possible.
Good thread and list! Burning needs to be on the list as a like. Dislike - chainsaw problems. I don't have the experience to troubleshoot and resolve.
Brush is a pain no dought...handling stuff over 20 couple inches is not fun. Everything else ....i enjoy
Those are both likes for me, nothing better than a good wood fire, inside or out. I enjoy working on chainsaws and doing maintenance on them so I rarely have problems.
I would like this more if I had more than one saw. I do not have the experience to fix problems either. I'm afraid of ruining my one saw so I dont do my own work to it. I would love to learn though. Guess I'll have to get a few more saws.....
I have 2(40cc/16in) that I've had for awhile. I inherited a 3rd, a Homelite 33cc saw, if that is considered a saw. But, it runs. I'm going to put a new chain on it tomorrow and see what it can do with a bunch of ash logs I have.
Dislike: Sore back Sore wrists (carpal tunnel) Sore neck Sore knees Bending over The recovery time...(seems to be measured in days now) Processing/gathering and it starts raining Unloading the last two rows form the 8' box of the pickup truck Running out of places to gather wood The feeling of looking at a small woodpile Like: The heat The low cost (???) The work This forum The outdoors The feeling we all get once we look at that huge woodpile
Like the OP, any use of a saw is my favorite part. Like splitting, both hand and splitter. Like dumping it of my Kubota, not so much loading, especially those rounds that are over 50-60 pounds. Don't like stacking, never seemed to have knock for it. Walking around in brush is the worst of all.
For me the best part is the thrill of the hunt. Driving through the dump gate, anticipating what treasure lies within, or answering a Craigslist, not knowing if I will be chosen. Then the giddy joy of cramming it all in my car. Unloading is not quite as much fun, and cutting, splitting, and stacking are methodical and satisfying jobs. Even moving wood into the house in winter is enjoyable, because at that time of the year I need the exercise. I guess my least favorite part of firewood work is the bitter end, cleaning ashes out of the stove.
I really enjoy felling and bucking. If I could get someone else to do everything else, I'd be the guy with the chainsaw in the woods all day long, Splitting is ok, and I kind of like stacking because it requires a little thought to get the pieces to fit and sit level. Like a good puzzle with your own solution. I like to split into a big pile inside my wood shed, and then go out after supper when it's dark, turn on a couple LED lanterns and just stack the pile. Especially when it's cold out. Moving wood, especially little stuff, not my favorite.
Dealing with brush is the worst. Hauling can be no fun either, depending on how accessable it is. If I can get my atv in there to retrieve it, I'm much happier than if I have to use a cart or ( gasp) wheelbarrow.
One of my favorite parts of all the work involved is watching the family enjoy the sounds/feel of a nice fireplace on a cold LI NY night.
I like all aspects of hoarding wood. Swinging a maul is by far my favorite. I love to stack because you can see all that hard work in a neat pile. Every once in a while I have to Noodle some knotty wood. Its hard on the saw and its slow so Ill say Noodling is my least favorite part of firewood work.
Me too! I have to cut half an acre of honeysuckle bush and Russian olive just to fell a tree. Then, sometimes I have to cut another half acre of brush just to get the wood out. Free heat has its price and at least I can afford that price.
I love most of it except for those knotty rounds and thorns in that brush. Stacking is alot easier now with the kids helping me out..hoard on fellas
I like the challenge of burning as little HHO as I can. When I was making a lot of money I didn't GAF, I burnt some wood on the weekend more for enjoyment than anything. It's not a necessity now but I can spend that HHO money on other things. I don't like sore back and knee.
