After coming home with my last load of free oak, mowed the grass, it needed it for sure. Still had plenty of daylight and some shade so broke out the splitter and started adding to the pile. It sure is a joy splitting red oak.
Very nice stash of firewood there. Can't help but notice you have the same atv as ours and you split the same as we do; vertically, the same way God made the trees grow.
I use that same logic Dennis; but instead I tell myself that God must of been behind the trees ending up horizontal on the ground by the time I got to them. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Dennis, I do occasionally split horizontally, but most of the round it get are to big for me to lift so vertical it is 95% of the time. As for the Grizzly, it's 9 years old and going strong.
Yes, red oak is one of the easier species to split, even by hand. I just can't imagine having the splitter vertical and then putting it horizontal, unless your back is hurting or something. Makes more sense to just keep it vertical. If you have it vertical because the big ones are too heavy to lift up onto the beam, then why not just keep it that way all the time? I know this is a personal decision and I'm not dissing anyone but barring physical pain, sitting is always easier than standing. I'm certainly not lazy but I do look for any advantage I can get doing a job that big which I have to do every year. Being 59 might have something to do with it too...LOL.
