Did you ask Woodstock what they would charge to deliver and set it up? Although I've not seen them go out that far (you're 3 hours away) they have gone out in the past.

I contacted Woodstock recently about them setting mine up. They said they do not have do that. They mentioned that some former employees had done that on the side in the psst.
By the way, Woodstock and I are both in New Hampshire.

I didn't ask that specifically, but I explained the situation and asked if I could even pay extra to have it delivered inside my house and was told no. I also asked if they had sold stoves in my area before and might be able to refer me to installers or deliverypersons, and they said they'd look into it. If this were March or April I could see them possibly going the extra mile, but probably not right at the start of the busy season.

Welcome FeelTheBurn. I live in Standish and I just installed my new WS Fireview a few weeks ago with the help of one neighbor. I’m disabled with a really bad back and he’s retired and has issues as well but we figured it out and nobody got hurt.
First off, I rented an electric two wheel dolly from Handy Man Rental with a 1200 lbs capacity to move the stove and pallet up two steps then down seven quite easily.
Another suggestion is to call Starbird Music. The piano movers told me they move anything heavy and they’re reasonable. They moved a piano from our lower level to my daughters house a few years ago. They could pick the stove up at the shipping terminal I’m sure. Hopefully they still do that!
Beautiful hearth you have there! You’re going to love an IS sitting there.

Thanks, Maina! I found a moving company/piano mover around here that I'm going to call too, but if they don't work out, I'll try Starbird or maybe look into the electric dolly. I was thinking of having them pickup from the terminal too. I wonder if shipping to a terminal in NH and having it picked up there would save me the cost of ME sales tax on the stove, offsetting some of the cost of the mover. :)

If you order online, or in the store and have it shipped, I imagine they wouldn't charge you sales tax.

Welcome, and good luck with your install! I installed our PH and then an IS with help from my wife and tractor pallet forks, pre-back surgery (unrelated, except in general terms). We skidded them across the floor on planks, but those stoves are at least as heavy as they say.

I grew up there, years ago, on the west side of the turnpike. No good contacts to suggest to you, but it sounds like you’ve got some good ideas in motion. If I came that way more regularly I could haul it for you, but no plans to get back any time soon.

    Hi Maina,

    Is this what you rented?
    Dolly Powered Appliance

If so, is it capable of moving the crated stove from loading dock to truck and truck to ground, in addition to going up and down stairs? Also, can it be used to move the un-crated stove into position on the hearth? The videos on Escalera's website are awesome, but it looks like they recommend the forklift versions of this cart for moving stoves like that.

If I can do all this by myself with that dolly version too, than it might be my best bet, probably $200 total to rent the dolly and truck. My next best option is hiring piano movers, both of whom have estimated about $400-$600 to pick up the stove at the freight terminal in Portland and deliver/unpack it on my hearth.

I also may end up having to go with an Absolute Steel if that works better with my flue location than the Ideal Steel. One benefit of this change would be a (slightly) lighter stove to move! :)

The rear wheels were larger but that’s what it looked like. It’s not able to lift onto or off of a truck bed or anything, just go up and down stairs. I don’t know of anyone with the forklift types.
Either way if you find one this is still not necessarily a one man job. My neighbors has used a few different versions of these at work and said it takes at least two unless it’s a really light load. Just FYI... I watched the company video as well and thought the same thing but it’s not that easy unfortunately.

I thought of another place today called Metcalf’s Hearth Services that does installs. They’re out of Porter and have a FB page. They cover your area. I doubt it will be less than the movers want but it might be worth a call.

Thanks, that's good to know. I'd most likely be doing this myself, so I don't want to waste the time and money getting one of these only to find out that it's not really practical for the job without assistance. Although the movers are expensive, it's no more than what local dealers have quoted to install other brands of stoves in my house, so not that bad if I do the install myself. Though if I can find an independent installer to do transport and do the install for a similar price, that would be even better!

Thanks also for that stove shop suggestion. I'll check with them too. I've got to give props to BKVP over on the Hearth forum, who saw my post and called some of his local resellers to find out if any of them would install a Woodstock for me. Outstanding customer service from a Woodstock competitor! If a BK stove would fit in my existing stove location (it won't, unfortunately), I'd definitely be considering one of them too. Anyway, one of those dealers gave me several names to contact, though so far none have responded.

I'm getting closer, though. And now leaning toward an Absolute Steel instead of an Ideal Steel.
