Finally something worth posting. A friend called last night and said his folks had some trees cut down and want the wood gone. Plenty of hard wood but you have to take the pine too. I haven’t bothered with pine as far as firewood but I guess I’m going to now.
Great haul! Pine is fine, especially in the shoulder seasons. And it’s dry in 6 months once split. Pretty easy to come by for free around here too.
Perfect. It will burn fine when ready. I would have frozen to death years ago if pine could kill ya. looks like a pretty good score
You'll find pine is fine and actually has some merits and uses. Trying not to handle the bleeding ends I put the logs or rounds to the side until the sap dries up, then I split it and stack it -> over there out of the way. Get it good and dry and it's nice. It burns hot and fast. The hot part is great, that fast part - not so much. But sitting around on a weekend when you can load the stove more often - a great time to use it up. Save or stretch the good wood. My first fire in the morning is pine. Good and hot quick , lights off the few remaining coals easy and in an hour or two I can reload with longer lasting wood and be on my way. A big pile of it goes pretty quick if you keep finding good times to burn it. I wouldn't be terribly interested if it was ALL pine but some would be good.
The only issue I have with pine is I get the sap all over me, on my glasses and in my beard ..... Just split them bigger and give them time to dry and it's great to get the chill off without having to open the windows because you went to far.
Mostly we burn silver maple. Last year in about -5° weather my kid stuffed the stove with hickory. Neighbors must have been surprised to see our window's open.
Lovely score! And i love pine! And, tulip poplar, oak, maple, chestnut, locust, fir, mulberry, apple, dogwood, walnut, ash, sassafras...
That's good Warner. Just remember that for removing pitch from your hands, use something like Miracle Whip. Even margarine works. You don't need but a little dab and the pitch comes right off.
I used some plain Jane veggie oil just a few days ago to get some pine sap off. I wonder if B&C oil would work? 2 stroke mix should.
Then the dog can take off the Miracle Whip..... it's a win win. Actually I have always just used the mixed gas for the saw, makes my beard soft.
I usually use goo gone to get pine pitch off. There is plenty of free pine to be had here as well, but I dont want to get it all over me, and the inside of the bronco
