Got in two good log loads before the weather heads our way. Hope to process them this week. One question if a cord is 128 cubic feet, anyone know how may cubic feet you would need if you just tossed it into a dump truck Think it would be like 200 cubic feet?
I would think that would be about right. I've heard different percentages of how much wood is actually in the 128 cubic feet stack to get a cord. It seems to me if you would be tossing it loose in to a dump truck to sell or give away 200 cubic feet would guarantee a nice tightly packed 128 cubic feet when stacked. Maybe even a little over 128 cf.

I know it’s extra work, but I’d be tempted to pile up a cord then throw it in the truck to see where it ends up. Be worth it if you’re using it to sell wood especially. Neither of you get shortchanged that way.
May just tell customer how I estimated and if he stacks it out and gets less than a cord I can refund him. Rare for me to sell any more. Most of forums that popped had answers between 180-200 cf
Are you gonna sell it green or seasoned? Most accurate would be to have a measured stack and then throw it in or stack on the dump truck.
It was mainly standing dead ash, with a little locust. Guy I am selling to knows condition, not 100% seasoned but good enough to go by late winter. Mostly cut now, still need to split and haul.
Thanks Eric. I thought it was in the 40-45% range. The 180 that Maine uses would be just about right on the 40% (128 * .40 = 51.2; add 128 and 51 = 179). If it were me I'd probably use the 45%, depending on what the load was like. 50% if in doubt.
Excellent....and showing the math too. Would a simple assumption be that this was figured out in Maine like other members suggested- by stacking proper then tossing, or by calculation alone? Just wonderin’ out loud is all.
Hum... It is just what I remembered and mostly always figured was about right. Is that worth something?
When I first bought my dump truck I stacked a cord on the ground and then threw it in the truck loose. I took spray paint and marked the wood level. I then stacked another cord and threw that in as well which filled the truck up. That was 9 years ago and it's saved me hours and hours since.
