I have about a cord of this sitting on my porch, and have been curious as to what it is. If you guys could help me out that would be awesome!
Cottonwood or aspen one of the poplars. Pretty sure cottonwood but not sure what state (area) you live in.
Looks almost identical to some cottonwood I cut last year . slight greenish smooth bark on the smaller upper trunk & as it grows bigger the rough thicker bark at the bottom.
Poplar or Aspen, I'm thinkin'. Have you burned any yet? If it leaves a lot of fluffy ash, and burns pretty quickly......see above.
Welcome Mr. Appleseed! I'll concur with the others here...sure looks like aspen or popple to me, too!
Definitely nice to see all these responses on my first thread! Papadave, no i haven't burned any of it yet; it's been about a week since its been c/s/s and this is my first time seeing wood like this. I've only been splitting and burning wood for about a year so I'm still pretty new to all this. I'm glad you guys could help me out as to what this wood is, I've been banging my head against the wall trying to figure it out on my own! Thanks everyone!
And if it helps, for being green wood its very light. I was able to get a lot of it in the bed of my buddy's 1/2 ton truck without it sagging down too bad.
Firewood!! Every piece of it looks like firewood. It'll burn much better than snowballs...I'd keep it.
No it's definitely green, bubbles of moisture were surrounding the head of my axe if it didn't go all the way through when striking the round. The heartwood is a lot lighter now (of course it would be a little bit lighter because its drying), but there is still a distinct difference between the heartwood and sapwood.
Yep...thats aspen... You'll learn a lot from these guys, we've all been first time burners before. Once you get the hoarding bug, you'll be set.
