The season is upon us - high 40’s last night - currently 58 degrees (mid afternoon). Yesterday I built a covered wood holding rack on my back deck - next to the fire room door. A stagings area of sorts - loaded from my stash in the woodshed. Holds just under 1/2 a cord and best of all - built with supplies I had laying around - aka - it was the right price! Pics or it did not happen. Keep those chains sharp and your flue clean!
I'm thinking perhaps it is time I get some wood on the porch too. We got down to 46. But, it is supposed to warm up again by the end of this week.
Nice work Gpsfool Will the roofing hold up to snow load? Hate to see your wood buried under sharp metal and snow. Perhaps some front supports also.
I do something very similar and it's very handy. My racks are on wheels. I keep reloading all winter as snow allows. Bring right in to stove from these racks. Limits bugs in house! Gpsfool you might want to raise up metal roofing right by sliding door so all water flows away to the right.
Hold up to the snow - been through that before - don’t ask me how I know... I can tell you,where I live an 8 foot span of roofing w/o support will collapse - this rack has support every ~4 feet and it’s undsd the building roof overhang so - I’m hoping it’s sufficient. Gpsfool
I went on a scrounge this morning a couple towns away after setting up last night via CL. Even worked in the deal I'd bring the guy a coffee. When I got there his wife with a baby on her hip was my host. She brought me through 3 barn yard gates and two animal pens and across a brook with a bridge 2' wide and down a thick patch of woods. The wood was great and plenty of it, but it was planes, trains and automobile trip to and from the lot to the Jeep. Even a wheel barrow wouldn't have helped. I politely declined, gave her the coffee and headed back home. Caught up on some splitting. Weather was great for it. I'm going to try to hold until October before we light one up.
Thanks for the reminder! I need to start scrounging to make my rack. Think I can stuff a cord on my enclosed porch once we wind down its 3rd season of use. One of my neighbors at work always has 4x8 pallets outside. Two of them and a few reg pallets and I think I'm in business
