 Appliance repairman just left, $150 for service call. $600 out of the gate and likely more to fix my 2011/12 ish Samsung front loader. Ummmm, nope. Pelletheads, specifically savemoney , getting heavy wet clothes out of the front loader and into the dryer is hard on my knees. Anyone with a top loader feel it's easier on the knees? The other consideration is $$, I can get into a top loader for less and give it a try, or spend more for another frontloader.

Why do appliances always fail right after holiday sales end? I have a few loads of soaking wet laundry as well as the other clothes that have piled up over the last week

Well that sucks , at $600 plus maybe more time to move on . Put that $$ to fix into a new top loader . That's what I would do .

Yes, same here. Our front loader broke a couple years ago. Fixing it (with a warranty in place) turned into such a circus, we just said screw it and went out and bought a new top loader. Would do it again in a heartbeat. Consider it WW.

No, just leave it. Actually have J channel (white) along the edges of the durarock and I used metal edging (bronze) to keep the edge shape, so should be good as it is. The wood below is undercut so can't be seen unless you are on your belly. And this thing is in the deepest, darkest corner of the basement so I've actually spent way more time and effort than is really reasonable considering I just could have gotten a couple sheets of metal to put down and been well within the requirement (just ember protection needed).

I have both the dryer and front loader on a base (I got them off of ebay) and they add another 13" which is helpful for my back. Although I didn't have any issues with the front loader at my other house (without a base). I find it easy to just scoop out into a basket - not even handling most of the weight. Course I gotta put it in a basket first since the drier is 10 feet away. Maybe if they are right next door to each other that would be the difference.

Unfortunately the brains of these new fangled machines can cost as much as a new machine once you add in labor.

I think Lowe's has an appliance sale going on right now. Don't know if you have those in your area?

Bought a new Whirlpool top loader HE machine 4 yrs ago when I moved to the new shack. Besides it making some weird noises (I'm used to them now), it washes just fine and <fingers crossed>, no issues.

This is the one I got.....$499 (on sale from $799 through Wed.), every conceivable wash cycle/dirt level/ soak/double spin/ etc, etc. known to man:
Shop Whirlpool 4.3-cu ft High-Efficiency Top-Load Washer (White) at Lowes.com

BTW, if you DO get a top load HE washer, READ THE LOADING DIRECTIONS! And I use "cold wash" and the "quick wash" cycle a LOT....clothes are clean.

I have the Samsung front end washer and dryer. So far, so good. This brand in the top loaders has a massive recall for some significant safety hazards. My units are only 2 years old. My experience with washers is maybe 8 yrs, toss out and replace. I used to fix them (myself) but no more. Can't get up and down from the floor. Anything with $400+ repair cost repair is the line not to go over, replace and start out new. Then get a service contract. Perhaps something squaretrade? Sams Club offers that on their sales. Also the repair contract with Lowes is reasonable. I've used it with very good results. they will fix something once or twice, then junk it and refund your initial purchase price. I don't blink an eye with an appliance fails now. They are not built to last. Some are better than others. Amazing how many are made by the same company for different brands.

Thanks for sharing your experience and opinions & advice on washing machines. Internet window shopping for top loaders, I hope it will be a bit easier for me. Be assured, I am not paying to repair this one, moving on. Just too bad things don't last like they used to.

There are some new ones with an agitator, looking into them, like this one

Weighing using more water since ours is brought here 400 gal a trip, and these use more water. Idk.

I also found it interesting the service tech that came out today mentioned the domestic brands were less expensive to repair than LG, Samsung, and Bosch. Ya, my last 2 sets of washer/dryer were LG and Samsung, as well as the fridge at our last house. At the time when I purchased them they were supposed to be the cat's meow. Now, I have a new Kenmore fridge in here that has the exact body (interior and exterior, including the shelves and drawers inside) as LG and other brands......Confusing.

We had the Samsung top loader that savemoney spoke of that is currently under recall. That thing came apart 4 times and flooded the laundry room. It was only months old. Wifey got mad and forced Sears to take it back and we got a Kenmore that has worked well for the last few years. Samsung refrigerator sucks too. I have to defrost the ice maker every 2 - 3 weeks or it won't work. And now the center section freezes the deli meats and veggies. Samsung sucks.

Oh yea it was 50 deg. this morning. brrr.

45* outside this morning when I got up (hours ago) and 64* inside. Started up the P43 (main floor) stove to take the chill out. Had to bring a bag of pellets in from the garage since I had run both stoves out of pellets in the spring. Stove has just started up for its second cycle.

Last night I got the Reflectix up over the foam board behind where the P61a currently sits.

    Reflectix installed.jpg

Need to grout the stove pad today, let it dry and then it is a matter of figuring out how to move that big lunk of metal to where it needs to be. Still waiting for the 6" piece of exhaust to be delivered. Once everything is in place, I can figure out if I need to get another pipe to make the run correctly (current configuration uses a 3' plus 1' piece for the run).

wildwest , I would stay with the front end loaders and have a stand build up high enough to sit them on. You could reach right in. Then get a rolling laundry basket. you pull the washed clothes out, they fall into the basket. You roll it over to the dryer and toss everything in. Pull out of the dryer and roll it to your area where you can sit and fold your laundry. We have baskets with wheels and hampers with wheels. Lifting is out of the question for us.
Front end loaders use less water and less energy. Clothes dry faster and with less energy because they are less wet than top loaders. Some new top loaders are advertised as efficient as the front end. However, they haven't been out long enough to have a reliable track record.

WE had a fresh set of Washer/drier when we built this place in 1993.
They finally got to where the Circuit boards (Touch panels) were no longer available and I ran out of used ones to cannibalize for parts.

We got a pair of Craig's list beaters and I wrenched on them off and on for a few years.

Then we got a bug in our butt and bought a new set from Home depot...

Top load washer with the short stubby agitator....

The first wash was the last wash...

The beast went into spin and nearly tore the laundry room apart as it headed for the door.

Went back to the depot and asked to see the manager..
Explained the issue and asked politely for them to come take the POS away and we would get another type of unit.

    The manager said NO WAY....

I smiled and quietly commented, "WOULD YOU LIKE ME TO MAKE A SCENE" (Store is packed with shoppers)

The manager turned ashen and whispered "You wouldn't" OH YEAH I WILL....JUST TRY ME.

Within 2 hours they had a brand new Front load Maytag Maxima in the laundry room doing it's thing...... VERY BADAZZ MACHINE.

Smooth as silk even with a HUUUUUUUUUGE LOAD.

    This machine is da chit.....

Only down side is the low reach down to get the stuff out...

But a small price to pay for a machine that does a great wash and DOES NOT try to destroy the house.

The older toppies with the full length agitator were great..

The Maxima uses far less water too.

Bought mine in '14. There are 13,000+ reviews, and it gets a 4.5/5. Yes, it spins at 660 RPM instead of the 1200RPM of the front loaders. NEVER had it move during washing or spinning, regardless if it was just clothes, or blankets.

All that said, if I had to buy a new machine today, would probably get a front loader......this one, and the stand:

Holy bat man, grout makes me almost look like I knew what I was doing

    Before grout
    Tile laid - no grout.jpg

    After grout
    tile grouted 2.jpg

I must send a shout out to the two HD employees who helped me pick out the grout color - it is perfect!

Next time I will take more time and figure out the "start in the middle and work to the sides" part. But figure this ain't the worst first attempt I've ever had at something :)
