Grabbed some maple not too far from home the weekend before last and had a little room left in my trailer, so I decided to swing by the dump and see if I could scrounge anything. I pulled up to a guy unloaded split, dry wood out of a Uhaul rental trailer. I asked what it was and he replied 25 year old split and stacked apple! He told me all about his father cutting and splitting it all those years ago. Most of the wood was solid, some of it weighed about as much as a piece of paper. I scooped up about a load and a half of it in my little trailer (probably about 1/2 a cord). I couldn’t get it all because he had made three trips to the dump and one of the loads was completely buried by he time I could get to it. The other two took a little digging to get to.

This is one of the loads. There’s a few random pieces in there that I picked up along the way. This may have been the best score ever at the dump.

That's sad he was chucking it though! I'm glad you rescued some of it.

Too bad you couldn’t get him to use your property as “the Dump” right from the Uhaul trailer. :)
    Great score!

In my area we have a transfer station that takes tree and brush debris. They separate what can be used as firewood and put it in a large roll off dumpster and throw the remainder into a tub grinder. It's amazing what gets thrown away, everything from oak to fruit woods can be found, and it's free to take. Can you imagine paying to dump perfectly good firewood?o_O

Good for you Woody for finding this. Difficult to imagine keeping that good stuff around this long. I'd for sure have taken all I could. Please let us know how it burns.

Agreed! Turns out he only lived about a mile from me!

If I’ve got the story right, this guys moved to PA after high school and just returned to CT a couple years ago. Guess the father never got around to burning it. This guy has been trying to get someone to take for nearly two years he said. They never showed up and he got tired of waiting. It will be some of the first stuff I burn this year.

What is everyone's experience with using chain saws at the dump? Someone just dropped 5 yrestin ours that are about 70 feet tall and arrow straight. Poplar.

Dump guy wasn't sure if I was able to use my saw....

If he doesn't outright deny you, it will probably be easier to beg forgiveness than permission should it ever come up.

And holy cow, 25 year seasoned apple is going to be some good stuff! Cool that it has a story, too.

No saws at our dump. It’s too bad because there is occasionally some nice stuff dropped on log form. And our dump is small, you could never get away with it if you tried.

I wish our dumps weren't so strict. We arent allowed to scavenge anything from ours. I still take a peak once in awhile when the attendant isnt watching. I could just imagine the uproar if I put on the chaps and fired up my Husky lol!

Nice score on that apple! It would be fun to split one and stick a moisture meter into it and see what it reads!

You can use one here. People cut up pallets all the time. Heck, we had a drunk fella back into the dumpter. Broke his drive shafts when it landed. We still get to scrounge!

    Same here.
1/2 the time you can't even dump anything - you pretty much have to rent a dumpster and pay to have it tipped and even then there are restrictions regarding what you can and can not put in it. So we end up with tires and trash all over the roads and dead ends - stupid.
