Hello How often do you replace your outside LED rope light? Our outside LED rope light installed approx 5 years ago are just about KaPut! They were not on 24/7 like this poor fellow that lasted 1.5 years! Lifetime of LED rope lights? - AVS Forum | Home Theater Discussions And Reviews Needless to say we are disappointed because when they were purchased there were claims of lasting up to 20 years! Granted the exact same LED rope light I purchased 5 years ago we put up inside the shed is still working quite well. Look at this outside rope that is protected by being under the eves is almost all gone! If you look at the rope closely the bottom or more exposed part is cloudy or glazed over. Again not direct weather contact! Is it the harsh weather in the North East? Is the new type 513 LED rope light any more durable outside? See pics
Just looks dirty from pollen or mold. We’ve had a rope light strung along under our back deck handrail for about 5 years and although some mold/pollen scum obscures a bit of light, it’s nothing a little Simple Green or Krud Buster can’t handle. And even if I forgo that cleaning treatment, the thing is still fairly bright.
Hi I just took one 10’ string down and cleaned it with Acetone but it is still very ruff and the intensity of the LED’s just peter out! That is on the good side, the other sides you cannot see the LEDs!!! See last pic!
It is possible that they’re just plain shot, but I certainly wouldn’t use acetone to clean Chinese plastic coated stuff.... Have you researched resistance values? Perhaps that would seal the deal in understanding the light degradation.
I got a few sets of red and green about 10 years ago and leave them out all year. Half are dead and gone, the other half are fine. Probably doesn't mean anything, but the greens are still going and all the reds are dead. And these were cheap WalMart lights.
Thanks for your comments, I just got some new type 513 warm white that are a better design, so I will try these.
Hello Just got the new LEDs in from Cali and up! I guess they are just a 5 year light bulb unless these are better? It is 80 Degs and 70 Dew Point! Sweaty job but how do they look?
Yes they are plywood clips and they worked great after we put a half inch spacer board under the rake boards! We also put in a soffit strip vent and ridge vent with a full covering of Grace Ice and Water shield under the Architectural roof shingles. Inside there are no collar ties just one custom made LVL With 2x4 supporting studs on each end down to cinder blocks on top of 2 foot deep holes filled with 3/4” stone for a little Support! LOL
Thanks Also like to put a few stones and weed block under and around it for a more pleasing visual effect.
As with car headlights UV breaks down the plastics. UV inhibitors only slow down the process despite how claims otherwise are stated. We got 5 or more years out of Christmas decorations that weren't left out for but weeks but failed electrically / maybe physical connections most probably from flexing in cold weather. Mother Nature is a harsh master sometimes.
Yes, I totally agree. One fix for the plastic lenses on car headlights is to spray 3 coats of clear paint on them! That may help tremendously for outside rope light! Thanks for your comments!
